    • Darkstar Universe: A Journey into Afrocentric Star Wars Narratives
      May 28 2024
Join us as we explore the world of Darkstar, an Oakland-based project that remixes Star Wars toys and stories into Afrocentric, futuristic narratives. Originating from the collaboration of two talented artists—(Korise Jubert) a sound designer and hip hop musician, and (Refa 1) a muralist—Darkstar showcases the fusion of art and storytelling from the perspective of black fathers and their sons. The creators share their journey, from humble beginnings in Star Wars fandom to creating intricate dioramas and stop-motion animations. Listen in to learn about their passion for community workshops, their influences from films like 'Black Panther' and 'Star Wars,' and their mission to inspire imagination and critical thinking among the youth. Discover the unique challenges and rewarding experiences they've faced along the way, and get a glimpse into their collaborative artistic process. 00:00 Meet the Creators of Darkstar: Afrofuturism in Toy Narratives 01:08 The Origins of Darkstar: A Journey from Hip Hop to Star Wars Kitbashing 02:08 Building a Universe: The Art of Kitbashing and Stop Motion 04:16 From Childhood Collections to Creative Partnerships 16:01 The Birth of Darkstar Universe: Merging Afrofuturism with Star Wars 20:44 Empowering the Next Generation: Diorama Workshops and Community Building 25:20 Expanding the Darkstar Vision: Afrofuturist Con and Beyond 26:42 Exploring the Creative Process Behind Dark Star 27:20 The Art of Collaboration and Skill Sharing 29:12 Engaging the Community and Inspiring Young Creatives 31:21 The Evolution of Dark Star: From Concept to Animation 35:19 Funding the Dream: GoFundMe and Future Aspirations 42:34 Expanding the Universe: From Workshops to Exhibitions 49:19 The Power of Community in Creative Projects www.darkstarunivese.com @darkstaruniverse on Instagram & Facebook Fundraiser: https://www.gofundme.com/f/darkstarun...
