    Chapter 6: Jonnie Carter

In this episode we tell Jonnie's story...

Jonnie’s story has never been publicly told. When we talked about the purpose of this podcast and how we approach our Missing in Hush Town series - we told Jonnie that we aim to tell the story as honestly and holistically as we can. We wanted the listeners to not just hear about Bethany, but to also know Jonnie. Fighting for Bethany has become Jonnie’s mission - her legacy, but when Jonnie was a young girl, nobody appeared to be fighting…for her.

    Chapter 5: Arkansas

"Jenny was told by Larry about the plans for that weekend: They would all sleep at Larry’s home in Gleason on Thursday night, then on Friday- they’d go to Nashville and look at apartments. Jenny still had a strained relationship with her father, but he told her that since he’s driving trucks again, he’d only be there on the weekends and the apartment would essentially be Jenny and her boyfriend’s all week. To Jenny- a young adult who spent her life in small rural towns in Tennessee, moving to Nashville with her boyfriend in an apartment sounded like a great idea- and she would get to be near her little sister- so she was sold. But when they woke up on Friday morning, ready to go grab breakfast and then spend the day apartment shopping in Nashville before it was time to all pick Bethany up for the weekend visit, Jenny shares with us how plans drastically were changed."

Chapter 4 part 2: The Abduction Attempt

"Jonnie knew she needed to enroll Bethany back into school- and that legally she’d only have 5 days to re enroll her. Since Larry could easily find Aunt Lori, it was decided that Jonnie and Bethany were to stay with Aunt Lori’s best friend, Dianne. Once Bethany was enrolled in Du Pont Tyler Elementary, unbeknownst to them, Larry was already working doggedly behind the scenes to track Bethany- he was listing every school from Illinois to southern Tennessee and calling them one by one. And it would be on January 31st, 2001, that he would find Bethany– which is one day before her 11th birthday."

Chapter 4: The Weeks Before March 4, 2001

"Jonnie was nervous- she had to be by the phone, but running between the car and the house phone was proving more and more difficult as Larry’s calls were increasing in frequency. She knew if she didn’t answer each time he called, he would become suspicious and would return home- and she couldn’t afford that. This time was it- this would be the final time she would leave Larry Markowski and fight for a safer life with her children."
