    • Episode 7 - The Role of Mentors, Experts & Guides
      Oct 29 2025

Assalamu alaikum and welcome back to Mani.Plus.

Every great journey has its guides the mentors and experts who light the path when the road ahead feels uncertain. In this episode, I step back from my personal heart transplant story to honour those who helped me through it—the people whose wisdom, skill, and compassion carried me from diagnosis to recovery.

When you’re a patient, you put your life in the hands of others. For me, those hands belonged to my cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, and dietitians—the medical mentors who became my teachers. They didn’t just treat my illness; they helped me understand it. My cardiologist, Dr. Simon Shaw, played a crucial role. He took the time to explain heart failure in a way that made sense, breaking down complex terms and showing me exactly what my numbers meant. He gave me clarity, confidence, and hope when I felt lost.

Then there were the transplant surgeons—the silent heroes behind the operating theatre doors. Their expertise and steady hands gave me a second chance at life. They are proof that medicine is both a science and an art, built on knowledge, precision, and an unshakable belief in what’s possible.

But not all mentors wear white coats. Some come as family, friends, and fellow patients, those who’ve walked this same path before. I call them the unofficial mentors. Their stories of survival and resilience became my compass when things felt impossible. They reminded me that life after a transplant isn’t just about surviving, it’s about thriving.

These mentors shared their scars, their victories, and their everyday truths. They showed me that setbacks are part of the process, that fear is normal, and that faith, community, and perseverance can guide you through anything. Their honesty made my journey less lonely, and their courage helped me find my own.

The lesson I’ve learned is simple: no one gets through life alone. We all need guidance—people who see what we can’t, who lend us their strength when ours runs out, and who remind us that the climb is worth it.

If you’re on your own journey—whether it’s health, personal growth, or something else—find your guides. Seek out experts who can inform you, mentors who can inspire you, and loved ones who can stand beside you. With the right people around you, even the hardest roads become navigable.

So today’s episode is a tribute—to the doctors who save lives, to the families who never stop believing, and to the quiet mentors who turn pain into purpose.

    • Episode 6 - The First Whisper
      Oct 22 2025

Assalamu alaikum and welcome back to Mani.Plus.

Before a heart gives out, it whispers. In this episode, we explore that very first, often-missed sign that your heart might be struggling. It’s not the dramatic collapse we see in films or the crushing chest pain we imagine — it’s quieter, subtler, and so easy to ignore.

For many people, the earliest sign of heart failure is shortness of breath. It can appear during the simplest activities — climbing stairs, walking to the shop, or even lying flat in bed. The heart, struggling to keep up, causes fluid to build up in the lungs, turning each breath into a fight. That deep breath you’ve always taken for granted suddenly feels harder to find.

Other early signs include fatigue, swelling in the legs or ankles, or a racing heartbeat. But breathlessness is often the first true whisper — your body’s way of saying something is wrong. Too often, it’s dismissed: “I’m just tired,” “I’m getting older,” or “It’s probably a chest infection.” Yet it’s at that exact moment that paying attention could save your life.

In this episode, we break down what’s really happening inside the body when that breathlessness begins. When the left ventricle of the heart weakens, blood starts to back up into the lungs, leading to what doctors call pulmonary congestion. Imagine trying to breathe through a sponge soaked with water — your lungs are working, but they’re struggling against fluid that shouldn’t be there.

To shed light on this, I speak with Dr. Simon Shaw, a cardiologist and heart failure specialist from Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. Dr. Shaw explains how early symptoms appear, the tests that confirm heart failure, and how early detection can stop it from progressing to a critical stage. Through his experience, we learn that heart failure doesn’t mean your heart has stopped — it means it’s asking for help.

Then, I share my own story. As a 51-year-old Asian man, my journey began quietly — with tiredness, shortness of breath, and swelling that I ignored for too long. Until one day, I collapsed and learned that my heart’s ejection fraction had fallen to just 15%. That moment changed everything. I was placed on the transplant list, my life hanging between waiting and hope.

This episode is a reminder that heart failure doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in. It gives you signs — whispers that something isn’t right. And if you listen early enough, you can act before it’s too late.

If you feel unusual fatigue, breathlessness, or swelling, don’t ignore it. Speak to your doctor. Get your heart checked. Early action can save your life or someone you love.

And beyond that, we talk about hope — the hope that comes through organ donation. One donor can save up to eight lives. A single “yes” can give someone decades more to live, to laugh, to love. Please, consider becoming an organ donor.

    • Episode 5 - The Patient's Path: A Heart Transplant Journey
      Oct 15 2025

Assalamu Alaikum, and welcome back to [Mani.Plus].
In this deeply personal episode, I take you inside one of the most human experiences imaginable — the journey of a heart transplant patient. Not through the lens of science or medicine, but through faith, emotion, and the raw truth of survival.

From the moment of diagnosis to the long nights waiting for the call, this story is about resilience, surrender, and gratitude. You’ll hear what it’s like to live with the constant tension between hope and fear — where every phone ring could change your life forever.

Then comes the call: the heart-stopping moment when the hospital says, “We have a heart for you.” It’s the start of a race against time, where faith becomes your anchor and trust in your medical team becomes absolute. I share the emotions of those final moments before surgery — the whispers of prayer, the quiet thank you to a donor I’d never meet, and the surrender to fate.

Waking up after the transplant is another story altogether. The pain, the confusion, the wires — and beneath it all, the miracle: a new heartbeat. A rhythm that once belonged to someone else, now carrying your life forward. It’s not just survival — it’s rebirth. Each breath, each movement, becomes a testament to human strength and divine mercy.

Recovery is a long and humbling road. You rebuild from the inside out, learning how to live again — physically, mentally, and spiritually. You face new routines, new fears, and a deeper gratitude for every sunrise. Through therapy, faith, and love, you begin to understand that this second chance comes with purpose — a reminder that life, no matter how fragile, is sacred.

This episode isn’t about medicine. It’s about meaning. It’s about the quiet courage to face the unknown, the grace to accept help, and the gratitude that comes with every beat of a new heart.
