Jamie and I met Kay recently at one of our favorite Mexican food joints, and instantly knew we had encountered a kindred spirit! After just a couple of brief conversations, we knew we had to interview Kay for the podcast - mainly focusing on her hospitable manner, and the incredible culture in which she leads and works. But, boy, were we in for a surprise!! Who knew Kay was a chef in a former life, had grown up with incredible challenges, had been through a fairly recent divorce, and had backpacked her way through 9 countries in 5 months - solo!!!! Wow!

    In today's episode, Jamie and Brian sit down with Zoe Penzes, a dear friend of the family (and girlfriend of another dear friend of the family), and discuss what life is like for a 22 year old female in today's world. They talk about the sketchy online dating world, navigating how to meet someone in today's culture that has similar values, the fears and concerns about dating, and finding THE ONE. They discuss why many are opting to wait until much later to get married, if at all, and the temptation to be jaded because of our parents' experiences, as well as all the nightmares we see and hear about on social media.

    We get to hear about Zoe's past, growing up without a father (who tragically passed of cancer when she was 2), and the void that left in her life, and what she felt was missing, and what she was looking for in a partner, and future family. Zoe shares great advice for anyone looking for a solid, long-lasting relationship...one that will last for the Long Haul!

    John Gottman, 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work (referenced this when discussing the "4 Horseman of the Apocalypse - Criticism, Defensiveness, Stonewalling, and Contempt)

    In this episode, Jamie and Brian discuss the "Inverted Bell Curve" of Marital Satisfaction...first, how normal it is to fall into this pattern, (hence the curve), and secondly, how important it is to work through these frustrating seasons/years, so that you can experience the high level of satisfaction reported by couples who make it through these challenging years. They emphasize that love is a choice, that it is fluid as far as passion and intimacy, and that it is the commitment that will hold it all together. They discuss the importance of evaluating where you are, being honest with yourself, and sharing it with your spouse - often! We pray that you will all be encouraged, and re-up on your commitment to be in it for the long haul!

    After a week off to celebrate Mother's Day and Jamie's birthday in beautiful Santa Fe, NM, Brian and Jamie are back to discuss taking a road trip with their entire family (adult kids, and grandkids), as well as the upcoming Parenting Workshop which will feature hearing from their grown kids (Chandler, Christian, and Carson, 31, 29, and 24). Vacations with family can be amazing, or a total FAIL. We've experience a little of both, but are driving toward making the most of our time together by adopting a positive, healthy mindset going in. No, things WILL NOT go according to plans, but learning to enjoy the beautiful mess is what it's all about.

    We've all had them - rip roarin' fights where we want to strangle our spouses (boyfriends, girlfriends, fiance's) - not really, but really. We get so frustrated, and we know that if our significant other would just grow up and quit being so stubborn, they would see our point, and agree with us. But instead, the stupid fight escalates, and what was, just minutes ago, a perfectly normal, fun evening, has now turned into a nightmare, with screaming, cussing, or worse yet, the silent treatment, the cold shoulder, stone-walling, not speaking for 2 hours, or 2 days sh$% show!! So, how do we short circuit this pattern? In today's episode Brian and Jamie share a fight they had just hours before recording, and the attempts made to "repair" the breach, and the outcome of said repair attempt. Enjoy.
