    Quotables:

Such a Cute Moment: "At one point, my mom and her brother are sitting on this bench and they're talking, so engaged with one another, and he is telling her why he has this bump on her head and she is listening so intently. And then she was smiling and believing every word of it. And by the way, it was an amazing, fantastical story, which isn't exactly true, but that didn't matter. She was listening and he was telling and she was believing. And it felt like in that moment, like the older brother and the younger sister on the school bench in the playyard after school." [4:14 → 4:53]

Positive Vibes Spreading: "What happens is when you give something or someone some attention, you give them energy. You really give them some of your life. It's a life giving exchange that that alone can spark others around you to do the same, and that can build momentum. And then in time, it can feel like an event or something that happens. That's a mini miracle." [7:12 → 7:40]

    Dec 1 2023

In this episode, Mary Foley shares a hilarious and heartwarming story from her caregiving journey. She recounts the day her mother, who has dementia, came home with a mysterious pair of men's pants in her purse. Mary digs into possible scenarios, but also dives into the bigger life lessons this quirky incident holds.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Don't jump to conclusions: It's easy to make up stories when we only have snippets of info. Mary urges us to hold off on assuming and be mindful of the tales we weave about others.

    2. Write a happier story: Mary suggests making up hopeful and uplifting stories about yourself and others instead of going down the critical and gloomy road.

    3. Laugh it off: Life's full of funny moments, just like the one with the men's pants. Mary encourages us to embrace the light-hearted and find humor every day.

    4. Embrace the mystery: We're all still writing our life stories, and that's okay. Embrace the unknown and keep going.

    5. Find meaning in the unknown: Even if we never found out who the men's pants belonged to, Mary reminds us to find meaning in the unknown and assume the best.

Choosing Hopeful Stories: "Why not make a story make up a story that's more hopeful versus depressing and critical, that's more uplifting versus downtrodden. That is something that's more of possibility than of like, oh my gosh, gloom and doom. Why not? We have that choice." — Mary Foley [08:05 → 08:26]

Embracing Humor Daily: "There's funny moments like that in every day, so why not just choose the light hearted and the funny more often?" — Mary Foley [09:12 → 09:21]

  • EP53 - My Uncle's Plea I Will Never Forget
    Nov 17 2023

I'm back with another short story as a sidekick caregiver that I'm calling Flip the Chip Moments.

Because as you know, chip happens on your nails and in your life. But instead of letting the chips keep you down, you can decide to "flip" a challenge or difficultly that’s wants to hold you back into something more positive that helps you more forward.

These stories aren't just about caregiving or aging parents and relatives. There are about life.

Today's story is about my uncle who is in hospice. After celebrating his 92nd birthday, he made a personal plea to me that I will never forget. His plea was heavy and sad and I thought I couldn't do a dang thing to help him. The chips in his life were definitely down.

I've never faced a plea like this. I didn't know what to do. And then, an idea came to me.

Yeah, don't give me credit. Must have been from God. I was just standing there with eyes like a deer in the headlights. Listen to here what happened.
