Good Words was an English monthly magazine directed at evangelicals and nonconformists, particularly of the lower middle classes. It contained overtly religious material as well as serialized novels, dialogues, articles on science and art, essays, sketches of travel, and poetry. The content was chosen with an eye to ensuring that the devout could read it on Sundays without sin. In 1870, Good Words ran three serialized novels: Carlino, Dorothy Fox, and Fernyhurst Court. The magazine also ran several series of travel sketches: Days in North India by Norman Macleod, A Visit to the Country of Vaudois by S. Smiles, Letters from the Tropics by C. Kingsley, and Wanderings in the Desert of the Exodus by E.H. Palmer. - Summary by Elsie Selwyn
