 In August of 2003, Luna spent a weekend at her family's cabin on Lake Waban, a cold kettle lake in northern Minnesota. She was seventeen. She was there with her cousin Maggie, who had just turned twenty and wore a silver locket that never left her neck. One night, while their parents drank wine on the porch, the two girls walked down to the end of the dock. And there, floating in the black water, was a small leather collar, buckled but without a tag. Maggie reached for it. That was the night the lake took her. Or, Luna says, that was the night the lake showed her what it had already taken. This is a story about what happens when you look at something that was never meant to be seen.
