In the autumn of 2019, Luna's mother checked into the Glass Hollow Hotel in Larkspur, Vermont, a decaying motor lodge off Route 7 with a cracked neon sign and a pool drained for winter. She went there to sleep, but she never slept alone. Over five nights, Luna watched from the parking lot as the curtains on her mother's second-floor window moved when no one was inside. The front desk clerk, a man named Elias, kept the same key tag for room 212 on a hook behind the counter—a room Luna's mother did not stay in, but which someone had been living in for years. This is a story about what lives in the spaces between travelers: the salt-crusted mirror, the running water at 3:17 a.m., and the woman at the next table who ate nothing but smiled with a mouth of glass.
