A slow night at the Midway Diner, mile marker 42 on a forgotten stretch of Route 9 in western Pennsylvania. January 2019, just after 2 AM. The snow had stopped an hour earlier, leaving the parking lot a sheet of black ice under the single buzzing floodlight. I was the only customer, nursing coffee in the back booth, when the door chimed and a man walked in who looked like he had been walking for days. He ordered the usual — but the waitress said she'd never seen him before. What he left behind on the napkin still sits in my coat pocket. Some things you don't want to know, but you can't stop trying to understand. This is about the question he asked me, and what I saw when I finally looked out the window.
