From the Dacian kingdom to the rise of modern Romania, this show traces the turbulent history of a land that has stood at the crossroads of empires. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through the ancient kingdom of Decebalus, the Roman conquest and the birth of Dacia Felix, the migrations of Goths, Huns, and Slavs, and the emergence of the medieval principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia. The story of Vlad Țepeș—the real Dracula—is explored not as vampire legend but as a complex ruler defending his realm against Ottoman expansion. Key episodes cover the Phanariot era, the 1848 revolutions, the unification under Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the Hohenzollern monarchy, and the fight for independence in 1877. The interwar period, the Iron Guard, and the tragic alliance with Nazi Germany lead into the Ceaușescu dictatorship, the 1989 revolution, and the long, contested road to EU membership. Along the way, the show examines Romanian language, Orthodox Christianity, peasant culture, and how national identity has been forged in the shadow of the Ottoman, Habsburg, and Russian empires. Why does Transylvania still stir passions? What is the legacy of Greater Romania? How does a country shaped by Latin roots and Eastern Orthodox faith navigate its place in Europe today? This is a deep dive into a nation that has endured, adapted, and survived against the odds.

  • The Hohenzollern King Who Remade Romania — Fexingo History
    Apr 27 2026
After the double election of 1859 united Moldavia and Wallachia under Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the new Romanian state faced a crisis of leadership. In 1866, a coup forced Cuza into exile, and the throne was offered to a German prince: Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Over the next half century, Carol transformed Romania from a struggling principality into a modern kingdom. He navigated the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, securing full independence from the Ottoman Empire. He oversaw the construction of the Cernavodă Bridge — at its completion in 1895, the longest bridge in Europe. He backed the building of the Carpathian railway lines and the development of the port of Constanța. He also modernized the military, modeled on the Prussian system. Carol's reign saw the rise of the National Liberal Party, the introduction of universal male suffrage (though limited), and the brutal 1907 peasant revolt, which exposed deep agrarian inequalities. In 1914, Carol faced his greatest test: World War I. Despite his personal ties to Germany, the Romanian public favored the Entente. Carol's decision not to intervene split the government, and when he died that October, his nephew Ferdinand took the throne and led Romania into war on the Allied side. This episode explores Carol's complex legacy — a modernizer who built institutions, but whose centralizing rule and pro-German sympathies left an ambiguous mark.

  • The Unification of Romania: 1859 and the Double Election — Fexingo History
    Apr 26 2026
In 1859, the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia achieved a peaceful union that created the modern Romanian state. This episode explores the pivotal double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza as prince in both realms, a masterstroke that bypassed the Great Powers' opposition. We delve into the roles of the Ad-hoc Divans, the Paris Convention of 1858, and the covert coordination of the National Party. Lucas and Luna discuss Cuza's reforms—land redistribution, mass education, and the adoption of the Romanian language—and the challenges from the Ottoman Empire, Austria, and Russia. They also examine the controversy of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen succession in 1866, when Cuza was forced to abdicate and replaced by a foreign prince, setting the stage for Romania's independence in 1877. This episode covers the diplomatic finesse, political intrigue, and cultural awakening that forged a nation.

  • Stephen the Great: Romania's Holy Warrior Prince — Fexingo History
    Apr 26 2026
In this episode of The History of Romania, Lucas and Luna explore the remarkable reign of Stephen the Great, the 15th-century prince of Moldavia who fought 36 battles and lost only two. They recount his stunning 1457 victory at the Battle of Baia, where he ambushed King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, and his devastating defeat at the Battle of Valea Albă in 1476, when the Ottomans under Mehmed II burned the Moldavian capital of Suceava. But Stephen's true masterpiece came at the Battle of Vaslui in 1475, where he used a fog-shrouded valley and a feigned retreat to crush a massive Ottoman army. Lucas explains Stephen's blend of piety and pragmatism: he built dozens of monasteries, like Voroneț and Putna, but also burned villages to deny resources to invaders. They discuss his controversial alliance with the Ottoman Empire late in his reign, and the famous moment when Pope Sixtus IV called him 'Athleta Christi' – Champion of Christ. The episode closes with Stephen's legacy in Romanian national identity, and a nod to his dream of unification with Wallachia, a vision left unfulfilled at his death in 1504.
