I Can Cope Method launches podcast to help people reframe stress and anxiety into “I can cope” moments. Created and hosted by Jonty Newbery, landlord of The Duke ofYork pub and clinical hypnotherapist Charlotte Phillips, the series offers real-life conversations, techniques and tools for anyone feeling overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, overthinking or low mood.

“We started I Can Cope Method podcast to help people cope with overthinking, stress and anxiety, and ‘I can cope’ moments.”

From “I’m stressed” to “I can cope”

The idea for the podcast grew from text exchanges betweenCharlotte and Jonty, where Jonty regularly described feeling stressed whilemanaging the pressures of pub life, from long hours to constant people demands, andcoping with stress, anxiety, depression and bipolar.

Jonty was using theword ‘stressed’ in a lot in his language and wanted to feel calmer. Charlotte hadbeen talking to him about the benefits of hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguist Programing(NLP). Charlotteencouraged him to experiment with reframing “I’m stressed” bysending him this text message: “Have you thought about how often you getstressed in one day? How about changing how you reference stress tosomething like – “I can handle this”. Or “I handled a situation and I’m fine”.Reframing the words can help your mindset and your health.”

The next day Charlottereceived a reply with the words “I had a lot of I can cope today”. Jonty hadtaken onboard the reframe and replace “I’m stressed” with “I can cope”. After 3weeks of Jonty using “I can cope” he had totally replaced any usual referenceto stress in his everyday language to “I can cope”.

Jonty said that hefelt calmer using “I can cope” and was going to continue using it. Jonty had shifted his focus fromoverwhelm to capability and which became the foundation of the I Can Cope Methodmessage that small language changes can restore a sense of control.

He was more aware ofthe situations that triggered the stress or the “I can cope” situations. Fromthis ‘I Can Cope - The ICC Method’ was developed and the podcast was created.
