On Monday, the F.B.I. raided former President Donald Trump’s Florida home. According to the New York Times, the search “appeared to be focused on material that Mr. Trump had brought with him to Mar-a-Lago.” Is that enough to justify a historically unprecedented raid? Or have the F.B.I. and Department of Justice fallen victim to politicization? According to a report from Reason.com, members of the bureau have been instructed to consider imagery like the Betsy Ross flag a warning sign of “extremism.” When asked directly if the Biden Administration is “weaponizing the Justice Department and F.B.I. against political opponents,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre alarmingly refused to denounce the accusation. Even Democrats are expressing concern—with former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard referring to the Mar-a-Lago raid as “an abuse of power that isn’t even being hidden anymore.”
