    • What is an Effective Treatment for Codependency?
      Oct 26 2023

There are many methods out there to treat codependency and they all have their merits. I use a three stage approach that gives people the tools they need to 'find' themselves again. 1. Inner child: A deep therapy that unlocks any trauma present. 2. Parts work: A creative therapy that examines and challenges thinking patterns. 3. ACT and Mindfulness: A present moment therapy to help calm the mind. Mindfulness teaches us how to respond to impulses, that might trigger codependency with awareness of what is happening in the present moment, rather than simply acting instinctively, unaware of what emotions or motives may be driving that decision. In this stage, we also look at relationships and personal autonomy. Identification of Parts: The first step is recognizing the different parts that contribute to codependent behavior. This might include a "pleaser" part that seeks approval, a "protector" part that shields from pain, or a "critic" part that constantly evaluates one's worth. Unburdening Traumas: Many codependent tendencies arise from past traumas. Parts work helps individuals access and heal these wounded parts, known as "exiles," by releasing the burdens they carry. prepare to meet your inner children! Developing the Self: Central to this process is the concept of the "Self," an undamaged core of compassion, curiosity, and calmness. By connecting with the Self, individuals can navigate their relationships with more balance and less dependency. When this work is done, then valuable steps can be taken to develop personal autonomy and find relationship and personal values.
