What if Jesus actually explained the divorce and remarriage "exception clause" and we have been missing it the whole time? I make the textual case that the second half of Matthew 5:32 is Jesus's explanation of "porneia" in the exception clause. A surprising number of indicators point to this interpretation as the correct one.

Jesus calls remarriage adultery seven times in the New Testament. In two of those declarations, Jesus includes a clause that is either an exception or an exclusion. In this episode, I explain the difference between the exception interpretation and the exclusion interpretation. Then, I explain why I think this clause is an exception.

The Greek word porneia refers to illicit sexual conduct. In the Jewish debate regarding remarriage, this term (and its Hebrew counterpart zanah) referred to invalid remarriages. Jesus's exception clause, which employed the term porniea, used it in a technical sense to refer to an adulterous remarriage. Therefore, Jesus taught divorce and remarriage is adultery unless a man married a divorced woman, divorced her, and then he remarried (as his first marriage to the divorcee was an invalid marriage).

Polygamy was tolerated in the Old Testament, but not anymore. Polygamous marriages must be divorced. In a similar way, adulterous remarriages must be divorced.
