  • Episode 1: An Introduction to Dancing in the Mind Fields of Public Education
    Mar 15 2024

This podcast is the first episode of the first year of our series of podcasts. In it, Phil Stover provides an introduction to the concept of Dancing in the Mind Fields of Public Education in the United States. Phil provides an overview of his background working in more than 100 districts and institutions of higher learning.

This initial podcast presents the core thesis behind all of Phil's podcasts; that despite a district's best efforts, teaching and learning are subject to a whole host of external and internal factors that either enhance or inhibit classroom outcomes. Those forces extend way beyond the classroom to the district itself as a part of the community, state, and nation. A successful educator learns to dance around the minefields of public education while at the same time enjoying the dance of nurturing student's minds. That summarizes Dancing in the Mind Fields, the theme of this podcast series. Enjoy!

  • Episode 2: How are the Children?
    Mar 20 2024

This episode, the second of year one delves into the background of the question "how are the Children? It also explores the concept that the entire district, as a system, either helps or hinders the school sites by means of the culture, climate, and consistency that it creates.

This episode explains my commitment to the concept that the entire district is instrumental in improving or hindering student achievement. It makes the case that when roles are unclear or chaotic, both teaching and learning function at a less than optimal level. We go back into history to discuss perspectives on schools from two thousand year ago into the twenty-first century.

I trust you will enjoy this episode, smile and learn about how the adults in the district impact the answer to the question "how are the children?" Our goal as educators must be to create an environment where is answer is likely to be "the children are well!" Let's all keep on dancing!

  • Episode 3: Defining the District
    Mar 20 2024

In episode 3 of year 1 we look at the variety in public school districts in the United States. I point out the scarcity of studies on how the district as a whole impacts student learning.

Distancing mechanisms are constructs that inhibit student learning and lead to what I deem "tribal markings" within districts. Even within, let alone between districts a variety of culture, languages, and customs exist.

I delve into family systems theory to extract the model of the "family scapegoat" to apply to school districts. I emphasize the importance of learning to respect our differences as we collectively seek to help the students from within our own individual perspectives, beliefs, and values. I hope you enjoy this third in our podcast series. Let's all keep on dancing!
