Surrounded by violent waters and sharp stone, Bird Rock earned a deadly reputation long before a lighthouse was built to protect passing ships. After countless wrecks, a beacon was finally raised, but the danger did not end there.
The lighthouse’s first keeper reportedly lost his sanity on the isolated island, warning as he was taken away that no keeper would ever remain on Bird Rock for ten years.
What followed was a chilling pattern. Keeper after keeper faced tragedy, including fatal accidents, devastating injuries, and lives cut short before reaching that ten year mark.
In this episode of Down the Crooked Path, Amanda explores the history of Bird Rock, the men who tried to keep its light burning, and the unsettling question of whether the island itself refused to let anyone stay.
