  • Why Should Mom-And-Pop Stores Need To Go Online? A Big Opportunity!
    Feb 6 2023

In the past, there was a suggestion for small, local retail stores to transition to online sales platforms in order to improve their convenience and user-friendliness for customers. However, the recent global pandemic has made the shift to eCommerce an absolute necessity for these mom-and-pop shops. In India, for example, many small stores were able to quickly adapt to using WhatsApp and GooglePay as their primary ordering methods.

Amazon saw a surge in business during the pandemic, these small retailers were able to keep up by utilizing the power of WhatsApp. Entrepreneurs have shown themselves to be quick adopters, as evidenced by the popularity of food delivery services. Supermarkets also jumped on the trend by partnering with mobile app aggregators for food delivery services.

While some small retail stores saw a significant increase in business by going entirely online, others have realized that a hybrid approach, utilizing both online and offline sales channels, is the way of the future. Allocating a budget for digital marketing is crucial for reaching a wider audience. However, simply going online is not enough. A strong retail strategy that effectively integrates both online and offline sales is necessary for success in this ever-evolving market.

For customers, the current retail landscape offers a vast array of options and competition. Retailers from all over the world are ready to serve them with competitive pricing and innovative marketing strategies. This is why it is crucial for small retail stores to take the leap and move online, not only to stay afloat but to thrive in the new retail environment.

At minimum, we have seen a 40% growth in businesses after they have transitioned to online sales. Integrating mom-and-pop stores into the eCommerce world can not only benefit their individual success, but also create a more diverse and accessible marketplace for customers.

    1. Wider Reach: By having an online presence, retail stores can reach a much larger audience, including customers from outside their local area. A local store can now reach customers across the country through their online store.
    2. Increased Convenience: Online shopping offers customers the convenience of being able to purchase items from the comfort of their own homes. An elderly customer who may have mobility issues can now shop without leaving their home.
    3. Better Inventory Management: Going digital can allow retailers to better track their inventory and manage their stock levels more effectively. This can help reduce waste and save on costs. A local store can now accurately track their sales data and make data-driven decisions on restocking and inventory management.
    4. Improved Customer Experience: By utilizing digital technologies, retailers can provide a better shopping experience for their customers. A local store can now offer personalized recommendations and a seamless checkout process through their online store.
    5. Enhanced Marketing Opportunities: Digital platforms provide a wealth of marketing opportunities for retailers to reach and engage with their customers. A local store can now leverage social media to promote their products and reach a wider audience.
    6. Increased Sales and Revenue: By having an online presence, retailers can increase their sales and revenue as they can reach a larger customer base and provide a better shopping experience. A local store in South Africa has seen a significant increase in sales after transitioning to an online store.

These benefits demonstrate that transitioning to a digital retail strategy can bring significant benefits to small retail stores. Recently, I thought of buying a new elliptical bike as my old bike was outdated. Got a feel as it become so smooth to ride and lost its power. It looks old too. Called the brand sales executive for home inspection to choose a better model on exchange.

He came and suggested a few models after understanding my usage of the same. After an hour, we concluded on a particular model and start exploring the possibilities of exchange. The old bike can bring only a few hundred while I expected few thousand.

Looking at my hesitation, the sales executive offered a solution. It is nothing but to change the belt of my existing bike. It costs me a few hundred and starts performing like a new bike.

Sometimes, it is better to repair than replace. Most of our time will go to align with the latest you bring in.

The existing process comes with the advantages of your comfort and power towards it. I work hard to bring and align all these with my thoughts. It is simple to adapt new things from the outsider's perspective. At work, we look into the problem at hand and need more micro-level correction that can bring in results.

A simple change management impacts work if we believe and stand by it. Here are few thoughts how a small change makes big difference in Business.

    1. Improved efficiency: Making small changes to processes, systems, and equipment can increase efficiency and productivity. This leads to better results and cost savings for the business.
    2. Increased competitiveness: By continuously improving and making small changes, a business can stay ahead of the competition and maintain a competitive edge.
    3. Improved customer satisfaction: Small changes to products, services, and customer experiences can lead to greater customer satisfaction, which in turn can lead to increased loyalty and repeat business.
    4. Better risk management: Small changes can help businesses identify and mitigate potential risks more effectively. This can prevent significant problems from developing and help businesses operate more smoothly.
    5. Increased employee morale: By involving employees in making small changes and improvements, businesses can increase employee engagement and motivation. This can lead to better results and a more positive work environment.
    6. Innovation: Making small changes and continuously improving can encourage a culture of innovation, where new ideas are encouraged and pursued. This can lead to breakthroughs and significant advances for the business.

Build your strategy right, make little changes, and repeat the same till you get your outcome.

If you start doing everything from the scratch, it might eat up more time. If you do something right, it changes everything. It increases your confidence, highlights your effort, helps you create a better result, and you can be proud of your work.

Focus on making small changes can drive big results for businesses, as long as they are made with a strategic, data-driven approach.
