As Christmas approaches, it’s easy to rush ahead to the familiar themes of joy and celebration. But Advent asks us to slow down — to wait, to prepare, and to hope.

In this sermon, we focus on the often-overlooked figure of Joseph, the quiet, righteous man through whom God prepares the way for the Son of David. We’ll reflect on what Advent hope really looks like, and how God keeps his promises, honours the hopeful, and works through ordinary faithfulness to bring salvation.

What does it take to live a good life? Is it possible to live in a way that means we'll look back and say, 'I did everything I was put here to do'? In these final verses of 2 Timothy, Paul seems to have plenty of unfinished business. And yet he also confidently says that he has fought the good fight, kept the faith, and is finishing the race. In cricket, a batter has less than half a second to decide what to do with a 140km/h ball. No time to think. Only muscle memory. Only reflex.

Paul says discipleship often works the same way.

This week we’re in 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, where Paul reminds Timothy—and us—that Christianity isn’t a set of ideas to nod along with, but an apprenticeship under Jesus. And every apprentice needs practice. Serious practice. The kind of formation that shapes our instincts, our reflexes, our split-second choices.
