  • Bitcoin in the Classroom (John & Adam, Mi Primer Bitcoin)
    Feb 15 2024

Mi Primer Bitcoin (My First Bitcoin) is a bitcoin educational non-profit that started in El Salvador but is quickly spreading throughout the world with its open-source curriculum. Their growth in the El Salvador school system has been explosive and they offer a model that anyone in the world can replicate so I was really excited to talk with them, especially as you may remember Teruko a few weeks ago mentioned she's helping translate their curriculum into Japanese and will be launching a Japanese podcast based on it.

My guests are John Dennehy, founder and executive director, and Adam Nili, COO. We talk about John's background as a journalist and protester, launching a bitcoin educational organization after El Salvador made bitcoin legal tender, how adoption in El Salvador is going and what lessons it offers other communities and countries, how My First Bitcoin has modeled their organization after bitcoin in the sense of having rules not rulers, so that anyone can join what they're doing, and much more. This conversation pumped me up so I hope it has the same effect on you.

  • Take Your Business Global by Accepting Bitcoin (Adam & Cole, Coinos)
    Feb 8 2024

Listen on Fountain & earn bitcoin: https://fountain.fm/episode/YIfXmtlNMicyzTljW6K6

Coinos is the easiest way I’ve seen for businesses to start accepting bitcoin as a payment method. The interface is super simple as they abstract away a lot of the complexity that merchants don’t want to deal with at the beginning. They even utilize Liquid in addition to Lightning.

Naturally, we talk about the state of merchant adoption of Bitcoin but we also discuss Bitcoin scaling solutions like Lightning and Liquid and more philosophical questions like the tension between building totally self-sovereign Bitcoin tools that are true to the ethos but hard to use vs. building easy-to-use tools that make some compromises in terms of custody, as well as whether we want gradual change or overnight revolution, whether open source is a viable business model, and whether to stay anonymous as a Bitcoiner or not.

    Lots of food for thought!

  • Building a Bitcoin Citadel in Tokyo (Andy & Dash, Tokyo Citadel)
    Jan 25 2024

Andy and Dash are the organizers of Tokyo Citadel, a Tokyo-based English-speaking meetup group (and podcast). I’ve enjoyed getting to know them through the events and Telegram group, and am excited to say I’ll also be joining their podcast once a month.

In this episode, we talk about how they ended up in Japan for so long, how they got into Bitcoin and whether they would have had they not been in Japan, the reality of living and working in Japan vs the perception from overseas, how their various projects came about and what they hope to build in terms of a so-called Tokyo citadel, and the current state of Bitcoin adoption in Japan.

If you’re in Tokyo, the next meetup is tomorrow. For more Bitcoin meetups and conferences in Asia, check out the calendar on my Substack.

  • Why Don't More Japanese Get Bitcoin? (Teruko Neriki, Fulgur Ventures)
    Jan 19 2024

Happy new year and welcome to an independent Beyond The Price! As I explain in the intro, I’ve left CoinPost but I’ll still be releasing podcast episodes weekly, now from Substack (along with written articles - frequency TBD).

If you’re an early Substack subscriber and didn’t even know I was doing a podcast, I hope you like it. My focus is Bitcoin in Asia (adoption, not speculation) but the guests are all over the world. Some macroeconomics too.

If you’re a podcast listener, I hope you like to read too. Check out my early explainers of Bitcoin and look forward to more free-form pieces expanding on podcast topics.

My first guest of the year is a fitting one, the first Japanese Bitcoiner I was aware of, Teruko Neriki. She translated The Bitcoin Standard (a formative book for me) into Japanese and now works for Fulgur Ventures, a Bitcoin VC company. We talk about her Bitcoin story, translation work, and the Japan scene, as well as the educational projects she’s involved in and launching (linked below).
