  • Bella’s Bookshelf Episode 03: The Gateway Drug - Surviving the Spring Court & ACOTAR Book 1
    Apr 30 2026

In this episode, we are finally opening the book that reignited our reading obsession—the ultimate "gateway drug," A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Grab your favorite drink and settle in, because we are breaking down everything from the mortal realm to the horrors Under the Mountain.

(Spoiler Warning: This episode contains major spoilers for ACOTAR Book 1, and heavily hints at plot points from Book 2 and beyond!)

    On This Episode:

    • The First 150 Pages: Sam and Bella discuss the number one complaint about this book—the slow start. We talk about pushing through the beginning and why the payoff in the second half is so worth it.
    • Feyre’s Survival: We break down Feyre's heavy burden as the sole provider for her family , that fateful encounter with the wolf in the woods , and why Nesta's resentment makes her absolutely insufferable right out of the gate.
    • Welcome to Prythian: Tamlin comes to collect a life for a life. We explore the world-building of the Spring Court, the treaty wall, the Seven Courts , and the magic of "glamouring" (basically a Fae Jedi mind trick).
    • Creatures & Lore: From avoiding the Bogge with Lucien (our favorite relatable guy) to trapping the Suriel to get some straight answers.
    • Enter Rhysand: We discuss the massive turning point at the Calanmai festival where Rhysand says, "There you are. I've been looking for you," the tense dinner crash , and how Sarah J. Maas brilliantly sets up the terrifying High Lord of the Night Court.
    • Under the Mountain: Bella and Sam recount Amarantha's brutal games. We cover the giant worm trial , the life-saving tattoo bargain , the "heart of stone" trick , and Sam's frustration that the answer to the riddle was obviously"love" the whole time.
    • The Epic Conclusion: Feyre is Made. We talk about breaking the fifty-year curse , Tamlin's true limitations , and that shocking, realization-filled look Rhysand gives Feyre right before he winnows away.

Next Week: We need a minute to recover from Under the Mountain! Join us next week as we continue to explore the ACOTAR universe and dive into what's next for Feyre, Tamlin, and the Night Court.

      • The Wolf King (A Kindle read with a main character name that hits close to home).
    • The Favorites List: Sam asks about the all-time greats. We discuss why Kristin Hannah is the queen of Historical Fiction and which thrillers actually live up to the hype.
    • Fourth Wing at the Ballpark: Why we’re heading to Coors Field in May for the Colorado Rockies "Fourth Wing" night to snag that Sorrengail jersey.

Next Week: We start our deep dive into the world of Prythian with ACOTAR Book 1.
