“Fez Moreno is a concert poster god. He’ll probably cringe when he hears me say that, but it’s the truth. He’s picked up the metaphorical-baton from the old school 60s psychedelic masters like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse and brought it into the present, blending that lineage with his own unmistakable flavor. It’s no secret, that my dude Fez is in high demand for his incredible creations, all hand illustrated on paper like the good old days. Fez has made posters for legendary bands like Eagles, Beach Fossils, Hot Tuna, Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Goose, Cat Power, and Dead & Company, and so many more. I’m genuinely stoked to share this conversation with one of my favorite poster artists. Fez Moreno - put some respect on his name, G!

In this episode of BEDROOM™, Fez talks about his past life in Austin, Texas and how he eventually landed in San Francisco. He shares stories about creating liquid light shows for concerts and, of course, making concert posters, which is the definitive heartbeat of this episode. We go behind the scenes as Fez walks through his process for crafting the magical, psychedelic posters he’s known for. He also pulls back the curtain on the less glamorous side of the job, like printing and packing posters. And yes, there is a right way to pack a poster, and Fez gives a step-by-step breakdown for anyone coming up in the game. Fez opens up about his upcoming fine art plans and where he hopes to take his creative career beyond the poster world.

We also get into his collaboration with Matt Cliff on a Topps Baseball Cards project, and talk about posters for The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Billy Strings, Kim Gordon, and more. Fez shares insight on dealing with overstepping clients and standing up for yourself in the wild world of being a self employed artist.

Episode 34 – Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist.

“Alright, first things first, let’s get it on record: I’m a fan of Krusty. Their art style is so raw and whimsical - there’s a whirlwind of relatability and humanity all within their little old line. Usually, their work is either absolutely full of color, where it just sort of explodes off the page, or it’s often just a single color, like black on white paper, and each approach has this entrancing aspect to it. It’s like yin-yang, I’m into both approaches and they each feed off of each other, creating the artist balance that is the work of Krusty Wheatfield. My guess for why I love their work so much is their subject matter. Krusty has this singular perspective and magical ability where they transform the small, usually unappreciated moments in our daily lives - the tiny, beautiful details - and they turn the spotlight on them. Their work gives me hope and honestly it rewards and reminds me with of an appreciation for life, the human experience, and how these little moments in our lives are actually the big moments.

In this episode of BEDROOM™, Krusty and I talk about digital vs. analog drawing, how Krusty got into making comics, and the moral dilemmas of the modern artist when they get commissioned to work for corporations they may not believe in. We get into their schooling at UC Berkeley and the importance of finding community, self-publishing, making zines and comics, and entering the DIY world of the Bay Area underground scene. We talk about how absolutely fun the act of drawing is and how we just wish more people would practice it because of how fulfilling it is.

Krusty then shares their experience teaching kids art and comics at The International School of San Francisco, as well as the long-term collaboration they’ve had with San Francisco’s very own punk godfather, V. Vale - writer and publisher of RE/Search Publications - which is possibly the only surviving ’70s punk publisher. We talk about Vale and Krusty’s joint residency in 2025 at Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, and we also get the scoop on their recently published comic anthology, Search For Weird, which was released in France.

We then tap into some listener-submitted questions from Justin Kohlberg, the cinematographer and filmmaker behind the musical project Moonrun.

Episode 33 – LaTajh Simmons-Weaver // Film Director & Writer

“Sometimes I get suggestions for who should come on the BEDROOM™ Podcast, and LaTajh was someone multiple film homies kept requesting. We started following each other on the gram, and at one point I slid through with my classic inquiry. LaTajh was down, and I didn’t know what to expect, though their Instagram bio says “better offline, promise.” Well, the promise was delivered. LaTajh has such a warm presence, and I felt super comfortable around them. The first thing they said to me as they walked up my studio steps was “do you do hugs?” (I definitely do), and from there it was just a highly enjoyable time sharing this space, this episode, this conversation together. I’m a fan of their films, and I can’t wait to see their next move. I also love that they shouted out Monta Ellis - real ones know. There’s no doubt in my mind that LaTajh and their films will stun the world, so it was an honor to spend time with them in my studio and talk shop. LaTajh is rad and I think y’all will dig this joynt.

In this episode of BEDROOM™, LaTajh and I talk about memes, Q&A’s at film events, their upbringing in Oakland, and the moment their uncle gifted them a camera and they fell in love with it. We reminisce about school critiques and how negative comments, even when justified, can fuel the fire to go harder in the creative paint. LaTajh shares the moment they were named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film and what comes with that accolade. We also talk about how they’re an SF Film Resident and how they won the Rainin Grant, the largest granting body for independent narrative feature films in the US.

From there we dive into LaTajh’s short films and the themes they consistently explore: the rapid changes that come with gentrification, the question of what “home” really means, and the lingering curiosity of how Oakland might have evolved without displacement. What could Oakland have become?

LaTajh then speaks on their current feature film project, No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds: A Queer Inclusive Memoir, which takes on the topic of the Oakland queer scene and how its radical politics can sometimes feed into cancel culture.

We shift into a conversation about Companion, their short film that serves as an ode to the unspoken romance between cats and their humans, and we segue into what short films can do for a filmmaker’s career and how they can serve as stepping stones. From Companion, we move to Hold Me Close, a short film LaTajh co-directed with Aurora Brachman. The film premiered at Sundance and chronicles the power and complexity of the relationship between two queer Black womxn who experience the cycles of life’s joys and pains together in the home they share.

We also tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Caitlyn Durkin, Film Producer, and another from Reina Lam, Film Producer.
