  • Assyrian History Pt. 1
    Jun 22 2023

In this episode, Juliana engages with Joseph Hermiz in a high overview of the Assyrian people and culture from a historical perspective. They also discuss Assyrian migration, participation in world events, and current cultural displacement.

Joseph Hermiz is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Joseph's work explores the multifaceted impact of World War I on the Assyrian community in the United States. The war triggered an influx of Assyrian immigrants, the formation of Assyrian political organizations, and campaigns to raise awareness of Assyrian culture and identity. By utilizing indigenous Assyrian sources in Modern Eastern Assyrian, Classical Syriac, Turkish, Arabic, and English, Joseph's work sheds new light on this world-transformative period and its effects on the Assyrian diaspora. Joseph's professional working and research knowledge in Modern Assyrian/Aramaic, Modern Standard Arabic, Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, and French have aided his research. Joseph holds a Bachelor's degree in History and Religious Studies from Arizona State University and a Master's degree from the University of Chicago, where he wrote on the evolution of modern Assyrian identity in the 19th century.

  • Bearing Witness
    Jan 25 2023
Bearing true witness is the opposite of what we see happening in the media, social media, and honestly even in day to day interactions. True witness isn't selfish nor is it self serving. Bearing witness is for the good of others. The opposite of bearing witness is silence. This silence is driven by apathy; a lack of care for our fellow human. We hope and pray to be good and true witnesses for the good of others and for the good of our own souls.
