    Welcome to "5 on the Frontline" with AIHA's Director of Government Relations, Mark Ames. Each 5-minute episode features unique insights from business leaders, experts, students, workers, and thought leaders on how to protect more workers and communities from occupational and environmental health and safety hazards.

    In this episode, Mark talks with Scott Schneider, CIH, FAIHA, about how can we avoid an increase in construction workers' injuries, illnesses, and deaths as we upgrade our infrastructure.

    Scott Schneider is a Certified Industrial Hygienist. He has worked on occupational safety and health issues in the Labor Movement for 40 years. He worked for the Carpenter’s Union, The Workers’ Institute for Safety and Health, the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) and the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA), from which he recently retired. Over his career, he helped develop standards to protect workers from Asbestos and Silica, fought to protect workers from noise exposure and ergonomic injuries as well as in areas such as work zone safety, fall prevention, and improving safety climate in construction.

    He is a Fellow member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and was awarded the William Steiger award by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for his contributions to the field. In 2019, he received the AIHA Social Responsibility Award.

    In this episode, Mark talks with Barb Epstien, MPH, CIH, FAIHA, about the dangers that construction workers face every day and what can we do to keep them safe and healthy.

    Barb Epstien is one of two industrial hygienists on the Safety Services team of the Associated General Contractors’ (AGC) Oregon-Columbia chapter. In addition to air and noise monitoring exposure assessments and training, she provides general industrial hygiene technical support and outreach for some 600 AGC chapter members, to help reduce construction jobsite health hazard risks. She has 30+ years’ experience in occupational and environmental health that has encompassed consulting, training, and regulatory compliance in a variety of industry sectors.

    A long-time active member of AIHA, Barb currently serves on the Construction Committee and also the Women in IH Committee. She was a member of the project teams that recently published Focus Four for Health and Focus on Construction Health: COVID-19.

    She was also lead author of the chapter on IH issues in construction for The Occupational Environment: Its Evaluation, Control, and Management.

    This is the second episode of the Workforce Pipeline Series. In this episode, Mark talks with AIHA member Savannah Jones about how to increase the number of OEHS professionals in the pipeline.

    Savannah Jones graduated summa cum laude in 2019 from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene and Chemistry. She then pursued a Master of Public Health in Accelerated Industrial Hygiene at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she graduated in December 2020.

    She currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the AIHA Local Student Section Council.
