    Description

One wrong move can undercut your message. Believe it or not, our bodies speak louder than our words. Postures, gestures, and expressions convey reams of information - and often not what you'd expect. A smile, for example, is usually considered welcoming. But crook one corner of your mouth higher, and you project superiority, subconsciously chasing other people away. Without Saying a Word explains how even the subtlest motions have meaning.

Distilling decades of research, the book deciphers these unspoken signals: from facial expressions and fleeting micro expressions to positive and negative body language. Discover which postures and gestures indicate confidence and build rapport - and which reveal disinterest, arrogance, or even aggression. Learn to end off-putting habits, accentuate good ones, and become an authentic and effective communicator.

Exhibiting body language that is open, honest, and self-assured increases your social influence and enhances your skill as a negotiator...while the ability to read the emotions and intentions of others is equally indispensable. Whether you're making a presentation, pitching a project, or closing a deal, the right body language can be your best ally.

    common sense

You do not need this book to learn that wide opened eyes shows surprise and a furrowed brow shows anger or concern, or that a subtle glance between two people while others are talking suggests a secret between them.

    Constantly pushing political dogma's

This book is constantly pushing a political agenda and viewpoint.

I didn't finish it because of that.

Aside from this, it's not really a beneficial read in this format, because it amounts to a never ending summary/list describing body postures that aren't really useful without images.

    More list than book

This book is made up of list after list after list. It doesn’t tell much of a story. In addition, so much of what is taught is given a caveat that it could be interpreted in more than one way. I did not find this book to be helpful.

    Ugh

I couldn't get through the introduction. It reminded me of a high school paper. My facial expression as I listened to the phrase 'body language' for the fiftieth time in a matter of minutes would have been interpreted by the author as abject disgust. Or perhaps joy. Or maybe sadness. Context matters, as I learned from this enlightening work of art.

    Leave the politics out

Bad Taste in my ears. The political agenda makes the writing void. You can't believe anything here because of the obvious author's political slant.

If the printed book has the diagrams, get that instead

Good attempt at describing all the visual cues, but a picture is worth a thousand words. Many body language items are pretty intuitive, but it is nice to put them together for a more complete sense of meaning.

A very comprehensive book on the topic

It's a very comprehensive book on body language and trade secrets of communication. The sections are divided properly and you can benefit from it regardless if you were a beginner or a pro on the topic.

The only point that I didn't like about it (which is not necessarily a bad thing), was that despite the excellent job the author and narrator did on making the Audio version more "visual", you do need to refer to the attached PDF, which kind of breaks the flow in case you were listening to the Audiobook while you were driving per example.

Great Content, but Needs Visuals to be Effective

The accompanying PDF is helpful to reference later, but if you're not using it as you listen, a lot can be missed.
Body language is something that takes much practice to be able to read well
Reflecting on body language can help tell how someone was feeling during a particular moment. Refer back to the book when this is the case.
Self confidence and timidity are common themes in body language.
Taking up space/being up right and forward show confidence, but this could be interpreted as arrogance.

    Understandable Research

Whenever I see a new book on body language, I try to obtain a copy. They all have interesting insights and observations about how people communicate. This one does, too. In fact, it contains decades of research, but that research is clearly and simply explained. The actions and expressions talked about are also understandable and easy to picture.

The book does what it should do—it communicates. I loved straightforward descriptions as well as the recaps and short summaries at chapter ends.

Clearly, Without Saying a Word will be a go-to-reference for me. If you like people-watching and learning about how we, humans, communicate, I recommend you add this to your reading list.
