Without quite realizing it, Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. In What Money Can't Buy, Sandel examines one of the biggest ethical questions of our time and provokes a debate that's been missing in our market-driven age: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society, and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets do not honour and money cannot buy?

intéressant, un plaisir d'écouter Michael Sandel
Ce livre est une critique de l'ultra-libéralisme. Les arguments sont intéressants et c'est un rare privilège que d'entendre Michael Sandel en personne le lire.

Poorly argued rant about gut feelings
He saw the movie Moneyball and didn’t like it, then writes a book about how economics have ruined everything. I doubt he put any work into this, it is written as if by a pretentious teenager who thinks he’s the smartest person in the room.
I want my time and money back for this.

Same cake different sides
Author really went in-depth to establish boundaries of markets, may feel repeated with examples close to each another. Ended with a high level guideline as a yardstick and a typical conclusion. Still a good read/listen?

A fascinating critique of 'market thriumphalism'
Terrific book, only downsides: slight repetition, some points could have been made with less examples.

Auflistung problematischer Kommerzialisierungen
Was hat Ihnen das Hörerlebnis von What Money Can't Buy besonders unterhaltsam gemacht?
Das (Hör-)Buch bietet einen ganz guten Überblick über abgefahrene und grauenhafte Märkte, größtenteils in den USA und auch China, die in Deutschland glücklicherweise noch unbekannter oder gar nicht vorhanden sind. Dabei macht Sandel einen guten Job zu zeigen, dass die Kommerzialisierung von bisher unverkäuflichen Werten und Dienstleistungen oftmals negative Konsequenzen nach sich zieht und warum man manchmal Märkte nicht in neue Sphären vordringen lassen will.
Welche Szene hat Ihnen am besten gefallen?
Mir hat die Entwicklung der moralischen Wahrnehmung von Lebensversicherungen im Lauf der Geschichte sehr gefallen.
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
Mir ist klar, dass er die Debatte um die Sinnhaftigkeit und Konsequenzen des Vordringes der Märkte in immer neue Gebiete nur anstoßen wollte, aber ich hätte mir dennoch mehr persönliche Meinungen und Grenzen erhofft, die man laut ihm nicht überschreiten sollte. So war es leider zu stark eine Auflistung von Problemmärkten und ein Einhämmern der zwei genannten Argumente mit Bezug auf den jeweiligen Markt.
Wer sich konkrete Lösungsvorschläge oder Richtlinien erhofft, ist hier falsch.

Very interesting book!
Very interesting take on our markets and how putting a price on goods may change our perception of them. It personally made me think a lot.
