À propos de ce contenu audio

“At once a scholar’s homage to The Iliad and startlingly original work of art by an incredibly talented new novelist….A book I could not put down.”
—Ann Patchett

“Mary Renault lives again!” declares Emma Donoghue, author of Room, referring to The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller’s thrilling, profoundly moving, and utterly unique retelling of the legend of Achilles and the Trojan War. A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, The Song of Achilles is a dazzling literary feat that brilliantly reimagines Homer’s enduring masterwork, The Iliad. An action-packed adventure, an epic love story, a marvelously conceived and executed page-turner, Miller’s monumental debut novel has already earned resounding acclaim from some of contemporary fiction’s brightest lights—and fans of Mary Renault, Bernard Cornwell, Steven Pressfield, and Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome series will delight in this unforgettable journey back to ancient Greece in the Age of Heroes.

“[Miller] makes a persuasive argument for the timeliness of her subject. …Miller’s winning debut focuses on Patroclus, a young prince living in Achilles’ golden shadow. Miller also gives voice to many of the women who were also consigned to the shadows.” (Publishers Weekly, Spring 2012 Preview, Top 10 Literary Fiction)
“You don’t need to be familiar with Homer’s The Iliad (or Brad Pitt’s Troy, for that matter) to find Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles spellbinding....her explorations of ego, grief, and love’s many permutations are both familiar and new....[A] timeless love story.” (O magazine)
“A psychologically astute Iliad prelude featuring the heady, star-crossed adolescence of future heroes Patroclus and Achilles.” (Vogue)

Malgré quelques longueurs (batailles, par exemple), ce roman reste très intéressant et émouvant. L'interprétation (qu'elle voix douce !) rend Patrocle particulièrement attachant. J'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé la fin.

    Quelques longueurs

It was my first book by this author (and this narrator) and I wasn't disappointed by either of them.
Madeline Miller's writing style is engaging and she writes beautifully. You get the same feels as when you read mythology but at the same time, she allows the reader to get a feel for the characters, she gives meaning and depth to their actions. I really enjoyed getting this glimpse into the tale of Achilles. An the fact that we see it all through the eyes of Patroclus made was what made it so good.
Frazer Douglas was a superb narrator. Some might not agree on this, everyone's different when it comes to listenning to someone read so this is only my opinion and other's might feel very differently, but the way he read the story broght forth the quality of Miller's writing and was very engaging.
So all in all, if you're looking a retellinh of a greek myth which gives you a feel for the actual characters involved in it, I'd say The Song of Achilles is a safe bet (as well as Madeline Miller's other book, Circe).

    A beautiful and bittersweet tale

I’m in tears . “ you will suffer but you will like that you suffer” as Ron said

Madeleine Miller delivers a beautiful and poetic interpretation of the myth of Achilles, told through the eyes of Patroclus, his better half. Well planned, excellently executed, it is as beautiful as it is dramatic, leaving the reader with a dull ache, wishing there were more.

An amazing reinterpretation of a classic myth

The Iliad, written down some 3000 tears ago, was essential to Greek culture. However, very few today can read or understand the ancient language and the work’s form in rhyming verse is far from today’s preferences. Summaries of the plot make it appear convoluted and characters’ motivations are at times difficult to fathom.

With this carefully written work, the author brilliantly succeeds in conveying the appeal of the Iliad to a contemporary audience, in English, of course, and in the form of a novel. At least to a non specialist, the plot appears in perfect conformity with the source’s and, wonderfully, characters come alive with humanity.

The author chooses Patroclus as narrator. He sensibly relates events as they occur to him, with no knowledge of the future. Subtly, his perception evolves as he grows from boy, to teenager, to adult, etc. Amazingly, gods and centaurs are seamlessly blended in so that they appear perfectly plausible (somewhat in the fashion of dreamlike realism of some South American writers).

The impeccable audio version is truly performed, albeit without any irritating exaggerations.

This extraordinary work is warmly recommended to all.
