Description

France, 1944. The streets are filled with swastikas. This is the story of a brave English girl behind enemy lines, a German soldier, and a terrible sacrifice.

When young English nurse Sibyl Lake is recruited as a spy to support the French resistance, she doesn’t realize the ultimate price she will end up paying. She arrives in Colmar, a French town surrounded by vineyards and swarming with German soldiers, but her fear is dampened by the joy of being reunited with her childhood sweetheart Jacques.

Sibyl’s arrival has not gone unnoticed by Commander Wolfgang von Haagan, and she realizes that letting him get closer is her best chance of learning enemy secrets. Yet despite her best intentions, Sibyl soon finds that betrayal does not come easy to her.

When Jacques finds that Sibyl is involved with the enemy, he is determined to prove himself to her with one last act of heroism - an act that will put all of their lives in terrible danger.

A beautifully written, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable tale of love and loss in a time of war, The Soldier’s Girl is perfect for fans of The Letter by Kathryn Hughes and The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

Fantastic story!! Narration gives me a headache!

The narrator sounds like she's trying to be an actress on stage and is failing miserably. Whether she's talking about a beautiful day or giving a detailed account of a soldier's injuries, she sounds on the verge of tears. Horrible. But the rest of the characters are okay. The story is different and it's worth a listen unless you have time to read it, instead.

In the same category (best WW 2 books)!!Wow

The story was so good and there were so many twists and turns. I learned so much about Alsace. I actually followed the real life battle in Wikipedia as I read the book. It is incredibly accurate! And I fell in love with so many of the characters, all vastly different, and appropriate for the time place and situation. I will literally miss them! It’s a must read!!

Viva la France

This story was very enjoyable to listen too. Love the mix of history and emotion. I loved the obscure history lessons on Alsace. Looked up the history of Alsace during WW2 and it was pretty accurate. The narrator had some good accents but she sounded rushed. I will read more of Maas' books.

Amazing story beautiful narration

The master narration by Henrietta Meier truly brings the amazing story to life. It does deeply into the treacherous life of female spies during World War II.

Well written but totally implausible

It is obvious this was written for the female reader, a story with potential but marred by a total lack of research. While there are some brilliantly written passages there are phrases such as “his plane was shot down by a torpedo” that completely destroy any credibility. This story had so much potential and could have gone in many directions yet felt rushed with a convenient weak ending.

Absolutely incredible story.

Wonderfully historic, emotional, suspenseful, etc. All of the things that made it impossible for me to stop listening. I can't wait to dive into more works by this author.
