Description

Winner of the Costa First Novel Award 2018

A brilliantly original high-concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception by way of Agatha Christie.

'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder, and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.'

It is meant to be a celebration, but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden - one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party - can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath....

The Golden Buzzer!

Five stars are not enough. Enthralling as you experience being multiple victims, perpetrators, advocates, accusers and think deeply of punishments and forgiveness. I’m betting the story out twists and turns anyone who listens! The narrator is absolutely lovely! He’s got the feelings captured in his voice! So very, very well done.

Page Turner, or Commute Lengthener

I loved this murder mystery. It took a little while to get going, but I trusted in the reviews here on Audible and it was worth it. I wanted to keep listening to the story, even when my commute was over. I gets into a great flow after the janky start. I'm really happy I seen the cover of this book in the book shop and added it to my Wishlist here.

it's a Sci-Fi book and you won't even notice it!

There are so many plot twists that my hips are hurting. I'd love to see a visual representation of all events. it's clever, it's period and had me wanting for more at the end of every chapter. Not in a cliff-hanger-Dan-Brownish way, but in a what's next!!! way. go for it

Torturous

But eventually finished it.... a very insubstantial story, narrator did not help. No recommendations from me.

Great Audiobook!

From beginning to end it was captivating! The speaker gave every character its own voice and the authors style of writing is very detailed and immersive. In the end it was far too short. I wish there would be more books like this. It truly was a unique experience.

Not one for me

I really struggled to follow the plot, maybe it's not ideal as an audio book. And sorry, totally disliked the speaker's voice. My taste, no offense, but it sounded so over the top, contrived, artificial, at times almost hysterical for my liking.

A good idea wasted

One of the very few of many English audiobooks I didn't finish. The idea behind the story is intriguing but the book is just dragging on. Additionally I found the reader quite hard to understand, mainly because of his frequent shifts in volume, which is rather irritating, especially when listening in a surrounding with some background noise.

Unputdownable

I've read scores of books from all kinds of genre. This is a gem - unique plot, remarkably fine drawn characters - and oh my, there are so many - and a choice of words that made me shake my head in awe. Excellent reader as well. Can't wait to read Stuart Turton's next book.

Tedious

I died seven deaths hoping it would pick up and get more interesting. Very annoying voice of the reader who gasped for breath before every sentence - as if it would make the plot more exciting - but it just made it more annoying, more samey and more tedious.

It took my breath away

This is a mystery inside a mystery inside a mystery. Set in an Agata Christie-esque setting, the main character is tasked by a mysterious entity to solve a murder which does not appear to be a murder - indeed, it is a murder by suicide, only it is even more complicated than that. At the same time, it is a time-travel story: the hero travels in time and sees the same events in different "hosts". And it is a thriller - as there are a few killers intent upon murdering the main character in all his hosts. It is also a story about redemption... The writer is a master plotter and the story is a masterpiece of ingenious plotting. All the hosts have very palpably different personalities, indeed, the main character is many different men at the same time. The language is exquisite, colourful, almost poetic. The best thing about the book is how tension is rising throughout the book. You simply can't stop listening... The somewhat questionable aspect is how over the top it all is. There is about 10 murders or so happening in one remote location, committed by several murderers... it is as if the 1920s gangs of Chicago had a conference which went terribly wrong. Yes, it is explained, yet I still wonder whether it could have been made less convoluted.

A unique and amazing storytelling

I just couldn't stop listening to this book. I stayed up 17 hours to finish listening to it. I just don't have words to say how incredible this book is.

Wow!

extremely good! written with great suspense and very clever plot. Even though the reason for the loop is not a too convincing the book is gripping from start to finish. one of the most exciting books I have heard in a long time.

Good but confusing

Really interesting story with really well written characters, but a lot of them. Maybe it would be a little easier to follow as a normal read. I really enjoyed Jot Davies reading, he is amazing. The plot kept me interested even though I was completely oblivious to what was happening xD I really recommend this book!
