FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES

An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!

Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

I decided to start this new series to save a few books from the Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch collections for later. When I made the shift from Bosch to Haller, the transition felt smooth. They shared a universe, a tone, and a location. But The Poet was a complete change of scenery. There’s no overlap, no familiar setting, not even the usual Los Angeles backdrop.

At first, the narrator’s voice felt a bit too old for Jack McEvoy’s character, and I had a hard time imagining him in the role. But surprisingly, you get used to it. After a couple of hours, the story pulls you in and it becomes a real page-turner.

What’s remarkable is how Michael Connelly manages to build such a gripping story around a journalist, someone completely outside law enforcement, with limited access to investigations. And yet, you feel right in the middle of it, immersed in every step of the chase.

My only regret is not reading this book earlier. I now realize I was unknowingly spoiled about certain characters I first met in the Bosch series. But aside from that, I really enjoyed the atmosphere and I’m already diving into Volume 2 !

Once the story grabbed me - normal life was suspended while I listened.
… and now a sense of loss. Luckily there are many more stories by this fine writer
