Description

In a rousing speech on race, poverty, and economic justice - given less than a year before his assassination - Martin Luther King Jr. drives home the mission behind his Poor People's Campaign. It is a clear-eyed look at the disparity of wealth in America, what it means for people of all colors - and a message of inspiration dedicated to the power of the people.

"And I say, if we will stand and work together, we will bring into being that day when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. We will bring into being that day when America will no longer be two nations but when it will be one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Wanda Sykes' powerful performance delivers King's compassion, outrage, insight, and vulnerability like few others could - and reminds us all of the relevance his words still have today.

"The Other America" is one of 23 speeches and essays from The Radical King, curated by Dr. Cornel West, including words never recorded in public - a revelation for his legacy.

The Martin Luther King Estate has allowed, for the first time, a dramatic interpretation of King's words, by some of the most charismatic and activist actors working today: LeVar Burton, Mike Colter, Colman Domingo, Danny Glover, Gabourey Sidibe, Wanda Sykes, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

My first audible experience, and the best!!!

this was absolutely amazing to listen to. I highly recommend Cornel West and Wanda for what they have done here I personally have never heard the speech by King himself but having it Revisited and provide it to us in this manner was extremely refreshing. All of the issues and plights of the poor class he spoke of we still experience today. History does not repeat itself it rhymes and this speech is do relevant and inspiring!!!

A must listen

While Dr. King gave this speech in 1968, it is still relevant today. Full of famous quotes that we have read in memes, in this recording we have the context. I think it is especially important listening for white Americans to understand what has gone on in the Black community, even in recent years. I thought about Ferguson, how Black men are presumed dangerous, and poverty. Dr. King’s words are as true and important today as they were when he first uttered them.

Gives You The Chills

This speech is just as relevant now as it was 53 years ago. MLK’s words rang very clear and concise in this speech through Wanda Sykes. It’s inspiring to the very core of anyone who truly believes in the fundamentals of real American values - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; as well as freedom, equality, justice, opportunity, and the ongoing fight for humanity in this country. He speaks from the heart and of real human experience in the USA, and there is no mistake in the truths presented.

Caution: Will make you deeply uncomfortable and/or compel you to gravitate toward unfounded conspiracies, willful ignorance, outright hatred (or a combination of these) — if you are racist.

Good

I remain hesitant to write a review of a speech that remains above me in complexity and in deed.

Dr. King's words are, unfortunately, relevant now

Wow! Profound words, but the spirit isn't captured in the reading. Dr. King was the ultimate writer.

Absolutely Exceptional!!!

I am amazed how the words of Dr. King still ring true today. The plight for the African American has not been easy and is way far from where it needs to be. I Am not a believer in waiting on justice and letting everything works it’s way out. Everyday our brothers and sisters are being struck down by the hands of those said to protect and serve us. I wish we as a people could unite as one. Together with our mindsets aligned there would be no stopping us. There could be no one to tell us no. I’m with the movement whenever it may be but it can’t be done by a few alone. Wake up Kings and Queens. There will ALWAYS be power in numbers.

only white people are prejudice.

it is my right to use government violence against white people through socialism to gain resources. because using force is slavery and white people abolished slavery for the world and that's racist. lol what I just said was irrational but it had a lot of feeling.
