Sal knows that when dealing with predators, it’s best to stay still. After agreeing to haul a trailer of scales and bone across state lines, he tells himself he’s providing a final mercy for the displaced. He’s joined by a mute hunter who treats his rifle like a prayer, and a young runaway whose eyes hold a familiar, tragic spark.
But as they move north, the rules of the road begin to bleed into the rules of the wild. The police call it trafficking. The world calls Sal a killer. But Refugio, the man leading the hunt, calls it a prophecy.
To survive the road to the Ozarks, Sal will have to decide what kind of man he is. The Ozark mountains don’t bury the dead; they keep them, waiting for the next name to be whispered in the dark.
