    Description

Randidly Ghosthound felt lost and alone even before the System transformed the Earth. Before every person had to deal with the sudden presence of levels, skills, monsters, and the very real possibility of death....

Due to unusual circumstances, Randidly starts in an isolated dungeon far beyond his level, forced to rely on the mysterious Traveler Shal in order to learn and survive with the dangerous new status quo for his world.

But survive he does, only to leave the dungeon and discover that while he experienced several hellish months in the dungeon, only half a day passed on Earth. Randidly's capabilities are now more than enough to help build a small enclave of survivors, but that doesn't mean balancing his sense of responsibility against the plots of an unfriendly town will be easy.

And although he doesn’t know it, he needs to prepare. Because the System has sent down a tribulation, which waits in the shadows and monitors his every move....

    This book has mood swings

Sometimes MC is doing something cool ...sometimes he's being lame ...a lot of the time he's being weird.
Towards the end, the story jumps all over the place ...to the point where u have to wonder, what is the point of this?

I enjoyed portions of the story, but there seemed to be a lack of direction towards the end, a lot of weird fluffy stuff that doesn't have much to do with the storyline. Idk if there was some kind of minimum word count he had to hit, but for whatever reason the author starts introducing new characters and telling us about stuff we don't know about or care about, MC wastes a lot of time, n has a bunch of pointless interactions.

Overall, this series is worth keeping up with, but after reading/listening to Defiance of the Fall ...Randidly Ghosthound just doesn't grip you the same way Super Brother Man does

If socially impaired protags are your thing

I'm honestly jealous of the characters in this story not privy to Randidly' thoughts. It's honestly equal parts exhausting and infuriating.

A mixture of socially retarded with a desire to help everyone leads to a wholly unlikable (to me) mixture. Add to that the bizarre decision to have his personality imprinted on by a weird taskmaster alien he knew for a few months...

Honestly, every time Randidly was in his own head, brooding, freaking out because people want to talk to him, angsting,I just wanted to scream. Or throw my phone at the wall.

If that wasn't enough, there's certain decisions he makes throughout the book (specifically letting a clear psychopath live and continue to terrorise a population) that just made him even more unlikable to me.

The only time I didn't hate him was when he was grinding skills (... that's a lot of this book) or in a life and death battle. The first section of the book too, where he was still humble enough to not have a messianic complex.

Ultimately, cool premise, but I won't be coming back to find out how the Legend continues.

I just don't like him enough to care.

    whimsical and dark

It's a very well written litrpg that has very well fleshed out support characters without taking away from the magic in the protagonist's character development. The Nexus is a fascinating expansive universe but the greatest aspect of this story is Randidly himself.

I very much enjoy the growing legend of Randidly Ghosthound.

1/3rd of the book is status readouts.

The status readouts do not work in audio format, it's maddening, There are so many long status readouts, one after the other and right in the middle of things I can barely follow the book.

Aside from that, the story has satisfying progression and an interesting system. The characters and interactions feel mostly believable and human. It's okay, I want this book to be better than it is. It has a lot going for it but it never really delivers, maybe it's the format, idk.

    the d's

I started keeping a list of names because i thought the shrooms were confusing me... but no, the story just skips who's narrating, and there are 50 people with d names.

    Went down hill fast

Started ok then just got worse and worse being stupid or having a disorder isn’t a way to move a story forward it just seems lazy

    we know

so I didn't make it past the second chapter but could not take it anymore. they keep giving the main character name every 3 or 4 sentence. he has not interacted with anyone else still every time he does anything they reintroduce him. it a little thing but it just made it unlistenable to me.

Has potential but a lot of really stupid parts

I picked this up because it was compared to He Who Fights With Monsters and Defiance of the Fall but this one is nowhere near as good as those.

Performance: overall it was good but there were a few time he didn't keep character voices straight, nothing too bad but a bit annoying.

    Story:
The good - I like the world and they system, even if it doesn't work great for audio ( I ended up skipping through a lot of the character sheet readings because it's just too long when one person has like 30 skills to read through). The paths are cool and add some great mystery and depth compared to normal level ups. The way the villages work and the spirits not liking the MC makes for good world building.

The bad - The MC is an idiot. It takes him 3 times almost dying before he understands the lesson to not just waste his stamina. He acknowledges the fact that people need to get stronger before founding a village but then goes and does it anyway screwing over a lot of people. He knows that taking a class will stunt his own growth, and so does Sam but they have no issue letting Donny do it without even a warning. He then let's another village get founded by people not strong enough to defend it without any care for consequences even after knowing the additional hidden dangers because as established it takes massively screwing up 3 times for him to learn. Also his last name actually being Ghosthound feels like a flimsy excuse to have him use an edge lord gamer tag.

If the MC is an idiot the rest of the people are somehow worse. Everyone worshiping the MC is just a bit much, yes he's strong and cool but whispering his name in reverence every time anyone thinks he's involved is just a bit too much. How is it that nobody can seem to figure out stats without MC showing up to guide them? A month in and people are teaching blatantly wrong information as gospel fact but MC spots the flaw in seconds. MC's ex goes on a rant about boring things peacefully proceeds to almost get killed but is saved by MC then proceeds to believe there was a peaceful solution, while also having lived through the first day where she saw people get ripped apart left and right for no reason.

If this story could get over the MC being the only person that can actually figure things out it would improve a lot. Also there is a lot of pointless swearing and references to sex, I'm not against that stuff being included but the way it's used feels like a teenager trying to be edgy while writing rather than fitting in the story.

    Very good LITRPG

Narration was excellent. Well written litrpg. I really liked the MC. did not start out OP and had to work for all of his skills and power.
    looking forward to book 2.

    Stop whining

Overall the story is okay, to much time is spend reading status pages. Those work for books but not as much for audio. I wish the MC was different.
I forgot how inept and whining the MC is. He is a very wishy washy character that is constantly changing back and forth from reliable and complainer. Woe is me for I have been given power now the whole world will be destroyed if I don’t save it. Kind of dramatic for someone like him.

    Solid litrpg

Solid litrpg. Better than expected. The first minutes I thought it would be same as the other litrpg, but it seems I was wrong. :-)

    Just bad

I don't get why people ratethis with 4 stars.
I can just image those are fake.
But is badly written, and plumb.
The mc development is boring and the progression stupid.
The leveling system isn't logical. Also 0 struggle for the mc.
    Don't buy this book.
Get a good one like path of the shaman or the ripple system.

    Good narration, some worrying tendencies

The story has some strong points, the focus on skills, the paths in general are some interesting machanic. However character wise it falls very flat. There is no character development. At all. The MC is an anti social loner at the start, and does nothing to change it. Sometimes it's blamed on social anxiety, but in no more detail than "He had social anxiety" no description of the actual emotions, our MC couln't be shown to actually have a weaknesd after all. Oh and despite being antisocial and basically never saying more than a few sentences at a time, every woman he meets is totally into him.

The voice work is excellent at least. Good work Andrews MacLeod.
