Description

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Orphan's Tale.

How have I been lucky enough to come here, to be alive, when so many others are not? I should have died. But I am here.

It's 1945. Surviving the brutality of a Nazi prison camp, Marta Nederman is lucky to have escaped with her life. Recovering from the horror, she meets Paul, an American soldier who gives her hope of a happier future. But their plans to meet in London are dashed when Paul's plane crashes.

Devastated and pregnant, Marta marries Simon, a caring British diplomat, and glimpses the joy that home and family can bring. But her happiness is threatened when she learns of a Communist spy in British intelligence and that the one person who can expose the traitor is connected to her past.

Painful Unrealistically Romantic, returned.

I desperately tried to power through this story to find out what happened with Emma and Jacob after the war from the first book, The Kommandants Girl. But I just couldn’t do it. The book is not bad when it is just focused on Marta’s situation/predicament but it is basically all about her falling in love with some American servicemen and being hopelessly in love after spending just a couple hours with him. It is so cheesy and unrealistic I finally had to just give up. I have never rolled my eyes more in a book. So if you are all about romance, maybe this is your jam, but I thought it was pretty terrible.

Good sequel but not as compelling as first book

As a sequel to “The Kommandant’s Girl,” this book is good but didn’’t draw me in as much as the first book did. Partly this is because the author uses “hesitate” over and over. “I hesitate...” “He hesitates...” “I hesitate...” It was very distracting for me, and although I didn’t count the number of uses, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s over 100. The storyline was captivating enough, but I did guess one of the major plot twists fairly early in the book. Still, I’m glad I got to see what happens to Marta after the events of “The Kommandant’s Girl.” She was such a minor character in the first book, and it was nice to see her character developed in the sequel.

Good book. Definitely worth the credit

Pretty good book. It’s not a “wow factor “ as the description seemed to dictate. It was kind of predictable, but I love how Saskia Maarleveld brings life to the characters. I would recommend!

Awesome read!!!!!

Read the Kommandant’s Girl FIRST. Both were great stories, but the Diplomat’s Wife was full of surprising and unexpected twists and turns that were all the more delightful because of the context of the story in the Kommandant’s Girl. Pam Jenoff has become one of my newest favorite authors!

Good twists

On the whole this book has a good story but the female lead is naive and frustratingly weak at some instances. It follows similar lines and follows several themes of the previous book “the Kommandant’s girl”

Great listen!

Especially if you’ve listened to The Comandant’s Girl, and evening if you haven’t, this story builds in a remarkable way. By the end I was on the edge of my seat!
