    Description

This statement was true when H. P. Lovecraft first wrote it at the beginning of the twentieth century, and it remains true at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The only thing that has changed is what is unknown. With each passing year, science, technology, and the march of time shine light into the craggy corners of the universe, making the fears of an earlier generation seem quaint. But this light creates its own shadows. The Best Horror of the Year, edited by Ellen Datlow, chronicles these shifting shadows. It is a catalog of terror, fear, and unpleasantness as articulated by today's most challenging and exciting writers.

The best horror writers of today do the same thing that horror writers of a hundred years ago did. They tell good stories - stories that scare us. And when these writers tell really good stories that really scare us, Ellen Datlow notices. She's been noticing for more than a quarter century. For 21 years she coedited The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, and for the last six years she's edited this series. In addition to this monumental cataloging of the best, she has edited hundreds of other horror anthologies and won numerous awards, including the Hugo, Bram Stoker, and World Fantasy awards. More than any other editor or critic, Ellen Datlow has charted the shadowy abyss of horror fiction.

    Great collection of weird horror

I have been tearing through Audible's horror anthologies and this was one of the better ones. Definitely worth the listen.

    good not great.

A lot Lovecraft wannabes but only a few that hit all the right notes it was a good time waster at work though. And while none of these tales will keep me up at night there were a few good chills.

Not really horror for me but...

...there were some surprisingly decent stories in this volume. The last story was by far my favorite and I wanted it to continue. Not bad, not bad at all.

    It's Ok

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It's a good collection of short fiction- there's a few interesting ones, but some come off as amateur or I've found in other collections.

If you’ve listened to books by Ellen Datlow - editor before, how does this one compare?

I haven't read anything she's compiled before, but I would consider reading another collection.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The male voices are fine, easy to distinguish- but a pet peeve of mine is when all the female voices are high whispers and this narrator does not have a good range for the female voices. They all sound like they're about to giggle and it takes away from some of the stories that are trying to be serious.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Maybe

    Any additional comments?

A narrator with a better range of female voices would have improved the performance.

A mixed bag very well read

Meh, some pretty good stories, and some not so great. The not as good ones have that tales of the weird flavor. They writhe in their depravity and then die/end, and you walk away thinking, "hmm, well that's over then".
The performance of the narrator is excellent, compelling-- felt the urge to listen to even the bad or boring stories so as not to miss their
    expert rendering.

Hit and miss but overall very entertaining

I liked it just fine. The narrator is what made it all worth it though

    Difficult to get through.

Did not enjoy this one. Only a couple of notable stories were interesting. Most did not capture my interest. A few I had to abandon altogether. Didn't care much for the accents. I really wanted to enjoy this anthology. Oh well...

    What a dud!!

What a huge disappointment. These stories are dull, convoluted, and it's difficult to even stay interested while listening to them.

    Well-crafted.

A fine collection of stories, dealing with many types of horror from a variety of perspectives. Highly recommended.
