Epic in all senses of the word

A lengthy adventure masterfully read by Ralph Lister who is able to render and sustain the character voices and temperaments cohesively across many hours of audio (no mean feat!). James Clavell had clearly researched the era in intricate detail adding to the authenticity of the tale and the rich descriptions of life in Japan. The ending was a bit of a disappointment in some ways, leaving the fate of some of the principal characters up to the imagination of the reader, which is in sharp contrast to the fact that we have been guided through most of the story at a deliberately steady pace and in great detail. Still - for a long reading that you are ready to spread over numerous weeks, this is a great audible purchase.

    Wonderful

An excellent novel, wonderfully read. Clavell paints Japan in an astonishingly positive light, despite his history as a PoW, and it is almost encyclopedic in its scope. Although there are a few ahistorical aspects (apparently the Japanese were actually quite fond of living, and did not commit seppuku at the drop of a hat), I still feel I learnt a wealth about feudal Japan. The language is a challenge for any English novel set largely in a non English speaking country, but you get used to the oddness of Latin being portrayed by a stilted middle English and Blackthorn's pidgin Japanese being represented by pidgin English. Ralph Lister's voice is appropriately masculine for such an epic work. Bravo!

    Fantastic fiction, masterful performance

This absolute epic of a story is a classic, and is read with such class by Ralph Lister, that I would never want to read or listen to it any other way. A true joy throughout, which left me engrossed as I never have been before.

    What a Journey.

Wow! Listening to it is an experience really. I downloaded the TV series too after the book finished. What a journey especially for someone who is smitten with Japan. The books isn’t just a story but a time machine showing you the history of a time bygone. The deep insight into the minds of perhaps on of the most unique people on Earth is mesmerising. And somebody please give Mr. Ralph Lister an Oscar, A Grammy, A Tony, a Nobel Prize or the Holy Grail itself for this stupendous performance. I stand and clap. Take a bow Ralph Sama. Unbelievable performance. The best I have possibly ever came across.

Worthwhile Re-visit to an Adolescent read

A steady albeit full plot with much historical geo-political, nautical and military interest The characters are well fleshed albeit one dimensional. The strength of the novel lies in the cultural clash between Japanese and Elizabethan / European culture and the ensuing conflict both between the Euro/Japanese and Anglican/Catholic interests. Another success is the pacing of the plot and interest which made the completion of a 1000+ page novel entirely manageable.
With reference to the performance, the sound production was disappointing with frequent fading out at the completion of sentences which was a distraction which occurred too frequently to be dismissed as a quirk instead of
    editing and sound mixing failure.

    a masterpiece

Possibly my favorite book ever. A deep study of cultural and religious fifferences, this book is also a cracking good read. Every day I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. Every evening I found myself chewing over the deeper concepts. A great book never really leaves you. Shogun has stayed in my thoughts years after my first reading.

Great book with some audio cockups

The story is great and for the most part audiobook is good. However, in some places the volume level goes so low that you can not hear the readers voice. First audiobook with that problem for me, ever.

    Excellent novel, outstandingly read

Epic truly is the right word to describe this journey. Most impressive is Ralph Lister’s ability to take on characters and keep consistent with their idiosyncrasies - that’s talent!

Kept me awake for several nights

I love everythin about it, the storyline, the voice actor, the author. Simply the best story I've ever read. I was just a little disappointed that it ends, i was hoping the story would follow the story of Blackthorne even after the war. Well, shikata ga nai, ne? But the rest is marvelous.

    Brilliant as ever

Read this when I was a teenager and was so moved and influenced by the story! 35 years later, the story still had a magic hold on me! What a fascinating story! So old but still so relevant! And the preformance is flawless!

53 hours of life in feudal Japan

The story is extremely captivating. It feels like the author lived in medieval Japan. It is obviously extremely well researched and while it is still a fiction, it depicts feudal Japan as accurately as it is possible for a westerner. The narrator was very good, easy to listen, making different voices and is not monotonous.

    Not too bad.

The story is OK. The love story between Maryku and the anjin San is actually nice. The many characters are hard to keep track of though.

Great Book - interesting views on Japanese culture

First of all my deep respect to Ralph Lister, he has succeeded in giving each character an own voice color and so they have somehow become alive. Thx! The story offers interesting views in the Japanese culture around 15 century I Found the beginning a bit long-wides but after few chapters it became so enthralling that I heard the book even during home cleaning 😂. Now I am very curious about the next book of the series.

    Awesome! But very, very long....

Welchen drei Worte würden für Sie Shogun treffend charakterisieren?

Sehr gutes Buch.
