At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Description
A novel of high adventure, great storytelling and moral purpose, based on an extraordinary true story of eight years in the Bombay underworld.
In the early 80s, Gregory David Roberts, an armed robber and heroin addict, escaped from an Australian prison to India, where he lived in a Bombay slum. There, he established a free health clinic and also joined the mafia, working as a money launderer, forger and street soldier. He found time to learn Hindi and Marathi, fall in love, and spend time being worked over in an Indian jail. Then, in case anyone thought he was slacking, he acted in Bollywood and fought with the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan...
Amazingly, Roberts wrote Shantaram three times after prison guards trashed the first two versions. It's a profound tribute to his willpower...

A true masterpiece
What did you love best about Shantaram?
This book surely has one of the best performances by it's narrator of any audio book, the characters were brought to life beautifully and visually, quite stunning.
The story is magnificent but like any true work of brilliance it would not be possible to do it justice with a mere description.
What other book might you compare Shantaram to and why?
I honestly can't think of one, I consider myself quite well read and this book is right up there with the best of them
Which scene was your favorite?
There are several moments which show true insight, the entire book is a pleasure to read
Who was the most memorable character of Shantaram and why?
So many fantastic characters, Prabaka must be one of the most memorable ~ I can see his smile ;)
Any additional comments?
Don't hesitate, this is one of the truly great audio books and I've read many of them. The performance alone is worth a listen.

The sights and smells of India
A truly stunning book about India, especially Mumbai or as most locals still call the city, Bombay! It paint a great picture of day to day life, albeit the darker side. Having spent a decent amount of time in Bombay and India, I can say hand on heart that it's a brilliant read and always take me back to the glorious sights and smells of India. Well worth the listen.

An Odyssey of Crime, Misery, Love and Compassion
What a ride, this is one of the most remarkable books I read lately.
First of all, Humphrey Bower does an incredible job in narrating this story. I do not know, how he does it, but the story gets so much more alive with his perfect replication of the different dialects in India, it is an outstanding achievement. He is not overdoing it, he just gives it the slight touch to make it recognizable.
The story is an incredible odyssey of modern times. Lin, the narrator, escapes from a prison in Australia and finds refuge in a slum in Mumbai. He learns to adapt to the new and unusual environment and earns the respect and friendship of the other slum dwellers. After a while his unusual situation gets the attention of the local Mafia and very soon he works his way into the inner core of the crime syndicate in Mumbai.
This sounds like the setup for an exciting thriller, but it is not that. It is a story about love and friendship, suffering and compassion and finally the meaning of life.
The story offers a lot of insight into everyday life in India, the blend of different cultures, the conflicts, the clash of extreme poverty with the carefree life of the wealthy and rich. Sometimes the story creates the impression of beautifying the squalor in the slums a little bit too much, but overall it sounds accurate and true.
Gregory David Roberts created a wonderful saga and shared a lot of insight and wisdom with his readers. The deep love for humans, he reveals in every little detail of the story resonates very strongly with me. Although sometimes he overdid it a little bit with having all the answers and while most of what he said, sounds true and valuable, it turned the story into the reflections of a Guru now and then. Other readers might see this differently, but this is the reason, why I could not give him the full 5 stars.

Genial!

Utterly boring and way too long
The entire story could easily be told in a few sentences. I did the mistake to finish this audio book, which was only bearable by fast forwarding through the chapters. Now I regret having wasted so many hours of my time, hoping the story will become somewhat interesting eventually. It won't. Absolutely not worth listening in my view
