Description

The Sunday Time best seller.

From the ground, we stand. From our ship, we live. By the stars, we hope.

The incredible new audiobook by Becky Chambers, author of the beloved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

#SpacebornFew

Centuries after the last humans left Earth, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, a place many are from but few outsiders have seen. Humanity has finally been accepted into the galactic community, but while this has opened doors for many, those who have not yet left for alien cities fear that their carefully cultivated way of life is under threat.

Tessa chose to stay home when her brother, Ashby, left for the stars but has to question that decision when her position in the Fleet is threatened.

Kip, a reluctant young apprentice, itches for change but doesn't know where to find it.

Sawyer, a lost and lonely newcomer, is just looking for a place to belong.

When a disaster rocks this already fragile community, those Exodans who still call the Fleet their home can no longer avoid the inescapable question:

What is the purpose of a ship that has reached its destination?

This book is everything!

Becky Chambers is so good at teaching understanding and respect and tolerance in an exciting and super entertaining way. She deals with the questions of accepting those who are different from us by telling deeply humane stories. All three books in the trilogy are bit different from each other, so it’s hard to compare them. They are all deep and amazing in different ways. As usual, I laughed, I cried and I ended up feeling hopeful. This should be a compulsory reading for us to learn about curiosity and acceptance. Narration is perfect!

best of the series

Chambers have matured while writing this series, and here delivered a low key masterpiece, filled with hope in humanity (despite the rather gloomy circumstances)

Boring space soap

The 1st book was really great. The 2nd one was already different but still unique and interesting. I found the 3rd book quite boring. The narrator saved the day.

In general the audio quality of all 3 books sucks. Only bass and treble. No mids. A challenge for car stereo and ears.

Surprisingly disappointing

I suppose i shouldn't be surprised by the disappointment, after all it is a relatively common occurrence that a series gets worth with every release.

Book 1 was a great story and the second book did a good job transitioning to the new story line by picking up characters that were already known to us. Both Books also had plot development that kept you from setting the book aside.

Book 3 however completely lacks all of that. You get a whole new set of characters that are only very loosely connected to the first two books. I had a very hard time to get into the story line because of it. Except for Tessas storyline i also missed a lot of charme that almost all characters in the previous books had. All in all i am disappointed.

speaker ruins the book

The quality of the speaker has a bad influence on the perception of this book. She reads it like a fairy tale. The speaker seems to be unable to distinguish between things or situations which are for the person(s) in the story pretty normal and those which are exceptional. A data warehouse - a thing even today considered 'normal' - is introduced with the same mixture of dread, awe, marvel and amazement as the scene of a gruesome space habitat accident. Every description of the environment or situations gives the impression of looming doom, every word is pronounced as if she is flabberghasted and astonished. Already after the first chapter this becomes very tiresome. I stopped listening to this book and continue reading it.

A few interesting concepts

... Nothing more. The lack of an intriguing story made me notice, how terrible the human interaction in this novel is. It is sickly-sweet and much too perfect to be believable at all. The author wants to explore a few interesting ideas, but fails to look critically at them and fails to enclude human nature. Almost every character in this novel is lacking normal human flaws, everyone is nice and as is expected of humans to be - but which we absolutely are not. If they make a insignificant small mistake they regret it and act absolutely perfect to make it right. They apologize. They are rational. They seldom are selfish and they aren't jealous or depressed. They are unreal. Even internal monologues don't make these characters any less phoney.
If you are looking to explore some sociological ideas this book might be for you, but keep in mind that these ideas are not fully explored and not brought to any conclusion, just presented in an uncritical way. If you are looking for an interesting plot or unforgettable characters, this book is not what you want to read.

Takes its time, but it is quality time

the story evolves slowly about the lifes of humans in a refugee fleet of spaceships. The storytelling is unexcited and takes its time to develop rhe motives and goals of its protagonists. If you are looking for action and fast paced writing, go somewhere else, but if you have the patience to listen, then it is a great and soothing Story about what is important in life. Enjoyed this Story very much though very different from the first two books of this series.
