What made all the decorations and gatherings become something to endure rather than impetus to ooh’s, ah’s and put-on holiday happiness?

No pressure to do anything like you have done before or to acquiesce to any other person’s standards. Instead, here is help to seek God like the Wise Men.
If you dare, God will not only get you through this hard season, but it will become a vital part of your journey, which is going somewhere. For when everything else is stripped away, Only Jesus Remains. It is He who is your sole hope for understanding life more. For increased inner peace. And even a return to joy. Richer, more God-focused life in the midst. Both now and forever.
