    Description

MacArthur "genius" and Booker Prize winner George Saunders returns with a collection of short stories that make sense of our increasingly troubled world, his first since the New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist Tenth of December

The “best short story writer in English” (Time) is back with a masterful collection that explores ideas of power, ethics, and justice, and cuts to the very heart of what it means to live in community with our fellow humans. With his trademark prose—wickedly funny, unsentimental, and perfectly tuned—Saunders continues to challenge and surprise: here is a collection of prismatic, deeply resonant stories that encompass joy and despair, oppression and revolution, bizarre fantasy and brutal reality.

“Love Letter” is a tender missive from grandfather to grandson, in the midst of a dystopian political situation in the not-too-distant future, that reminds us of our obligations to our ideals, ourselves, and each other. “Ghoul” is set in a Hell-themed section of an underground amusement park in Colorado, and follows the exploits of a lonely, morally complex character named Brian, who comes to question everything he takes for granted about his “reality.” In “Mother’s Day,” two women who loved the same man come to an existential reckoning in the middle of a hailstorm. And in “Elliott Spencer,” our eighty-nine-year-old protagonist finds himself brainwashed—his memory “scraped”—a victim of a scheme in which poor, vulnerable people are reprogrammed and deployed as political protesters.

Together, these nine subversive, profound, and essential stories coalesce into a case for viewing the world with the same generosity and clear-eyed attention as Saunders does, even in the most absurd of circumstances.

    Extraordinary

Just finished the first story, Liberation Day, in this collection by the same name. It's astonishing, unlike anything I’ve ever read, It hits like like a sustained poem from so many angles - just breathtakingly terrible and beautiful and achingly sad and true. Saunders' intelligence is massive and informed by both deep, compassionate sorrow for and scathing insight into the whole human predicament. This is what literature is supposed to do. I'd forgotten. Sorry no synopsis, it'd fall far short - better to just read it. He's writing about all of us.
I guess I should add that he's also very funny, a delight to read, really captivating. I'm unable to put this down. Each story has a different narrator and they're also very, very good.

Didn’t expect to like the cast

I like the way Saunders reads his own stories, and I was kind of bummed to see that the audiobook had a full cast, which tends to be hit or miss. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this cast. The narrators were not only good but well suited to each story; at times it feels like Saunders wrote them as monologues with these actors in mind. Fortunately, there is only one narrator per story, so no cutting back and forth. And it’s nice that Saunders still reads the titular story. (He also narrates some of these stories for the New Yorker’s Writer’s Voice podcast, so you can listen to how he reads it there.) And, of course, enjoyed the stories too.

    Excellent read

It’s been a long time since I’ve had so many short stories grab me and punch me in the gut, all in a row. Bravo.

    Always haunting

His stories always stick to your ribs. This, like his others, won’t let you down.

    Another Amazing Collection

I enjoy George Saunders' style. I love his short stories, and Lincoln in the Bardo is one of my favorite novels of all time.

This collection is another great one; not sure if it is my favorite, but it is very much on par with the rest of his collections. His stories are strange but feel "real." His characters behave in ways that are believable given their weird environments. The themes of the stories in this collection are all very closely related and are clearly about (or greatly influenced by) our current political and social climate.

The narration is fantastic. Saunders himself reads the first and last stories. in between we hear Tina Fey as "The Mom of Bold Action," Michael McKean as a grandfather reading his letter to his grandson, Stephen Root as a re-booted "Elliott Spencer," and other wonderful stories and narrators.

    Absolutely Brilliant!

George Saunders is at his best, and the performances are the best I've heard in the hundreds of Audible books I've listened to. I would rarely recommend listening to a book over reading it, but this is one of those books. Worth the price of the book just to hear Tina Fey narrate "The Mom of Bold Action".

    As good as it gets

I don’t have it in me to write a long review at the moment but it’s George Sanders at the top of his game and really good readers 👍
