Description

Winner of the 2018 Gemmell Award for Best Debut

Winner of Fantasy Faction's Best Fantasy Book of 2017 Award

Winner of Reddit Fantasy's Best Debut Novel of 2017 Award

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared and admired crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. But their glory days are long past; the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk - or a combination of the three.

Then a former bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help: his daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy horde 100,000 strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of impossible mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It's time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

What a fun ride.

Is it the most complex world with a hard magic system?
No.
Have we seen this kind of story before?
Yes.
Does it take it self serious?
No.

And still this book was amazing, it had me from the start to finish. I just love the callback to old rock ledgends. It felt like an amazing D&D campain with your best friends.

Great tale

Somehow is both relatable, fantastical. funny and somber all at once. Would listen to again.

The narrator is chosen poorly

The "Murican" accept doesn't fit the book or is even preformed in a coherent fashion. Somehow it sucks the life out of the book while making it seem that it's being narrated by a 13 year old trying way too hard to make the main character seem though and masculine. There's little to no nuance. Alternate voices for other characters aren't that bad but the intonation and tone overall are quite drab for my ears Considering returning the book.

Almost perfect

the only thing I have to criticize about this tale is when a certain character loses something ( you will get it when it gets there) to get it back right away on the next chapter. It was intended to be the final fall before the ultimate victory but it was poorly made. Beside that, incredible well told story

Didn’t relate. Not my cup of sense of humor.

Don’t know if it was the narrator or the actual writing but I couldn’t relate to or like the characters. The sense of humor seems to be aimed at 60+ year olds.

Excellent!

Loved it. True DnD and lovable characters. The story borrows a lot from the Dungeons and Dragons mythos but manages to put its own spin on it.

great fantasy + super humor = fantastic book

I love the humor and the old guys. A fresh breath on classic fantasy.
A small warning though, the language is a little strong, but that's part of the fun...
but if you don't want your younger children asking what clusterfuck means, perhaps it's not for the youngest audience.
Both thumbs up. Way up.

A funny and light fantasy debut you won't forget

I'm SO IN LOVE with this audiobook! I need a movie adaption for this!

It's the best debut I've ever read. Given the fact that I rarely rate anything "not Tolkien" 5 glowing stars: I really mean it!
Excellent prose, an engaging plot, the worldbuilding is fantastic (it has everything I ever wanted! fabled monsters, grim creatures, enchanted swords and incredibly cool war bands), the humor and the tone are well balanced and the characters are the cherries in top! I loved each and every one of them.

Kings of the Wyld had me feeling so many things at once, I can't wait to pick up the sequel.

The narrator did an awesome job!

Wrong voice for me

I love the book. Unfortunately I bought it through Whispersync so I didn't hear the voice first otherwise I might not have bought this book. Its just to growly for me and takes away from the pleasure. I'm probably gonna read this book.

Too much gore and not enough substance.

Its actually not bad. At times it reminded me of terry pratchet, when the overdrawn colorful characters reveal brief glimpses of their humanity, before falling back into comic book gory violence that was more like a bad warhammer novel. Unfortunately the hilariously outrageous, insightful and witty moments were too few and the silly violent ones too many for me to enjoy the book.

Great spin on D&Desque Fantasy

I didn't expect much from this story based on the blurp and it took me two chapters to adapt to the setting but then it was a good ride. Fun, suspense, drama and action mix well and the prose is good. If you are familiar with D&D you will recognize many creatures from the monster manual and other things and although it leans heavy on D&D it has its own, if a little generic, worldbuilding. The idea of "bands" of mercenaries with tourmanagers, groupies etc. is funny but it wears of after time.
The narrator of the audiobook Jeff Harding took me some time to adjust to, but towards the end I thought he did excellent, giving each character a unique voice and delivering tempo and emotions very well.
This title certainly sticks out in the generic mass of published fantasy and I recommend it to everyone who is fan of the genre, it has a proper ending and the announced sequel will probably expand on secondary characters.
I'm looking forward to it.
