Description
Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light.
Intellectuals have played a major role in racial issues throughout the centuries. Though their individual views may differ, as a whole their views tend to group, and just over the course of the twentieth century, they have shifted from one end of the spectrum to the other. Surprisingly, these radically different views of race were held by intellectuals whose views on other issues were often very similar.
Intellectuals and Race is not, however, a book about history, even though it has much historical evidence, as well as demographic, geographic, and economic evidence - all of it directed toward testing the underlying assumptions about race that have prevailed at times among intellectuals in general, and especially at their highest levels.
Nor is this simply a theoretical exercise. Sowell’s ultimate concern is the impact of intellectual movements on the larger society, both past and present. These ideas and crusades have ranged widely from racial theories of intelligence to eugenics to “social justice” and multiculturalism.
In addition to in-depth examinations of these and other issues, Intellectuals and Race explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Superbly simple
The world is much less complicated than we are made to think. And that is something Dr Sowell constantly emphasizes.
One thing of many that stuck and will stick with me is the importance of proof instead of just simply assuming or choosing to believe something.

A Satisfying Indictment of the Intelligentsia
Reading Thomas Sowell is like taking the red pill. Decades of thorough research has allowed him to offer readers an international and historical lens through which they might view contemporary issues, and it is truly eye-opening. This book focuses primarily on intellectuals/the intelligentsia and their role in shaping their respective societies' understanding (or, more appropriately, misunderstanding) of the various intergroup issues that they face. In a world where facts matter, his unflinching and often tragically humorous characterization of the intelligentsia, whose truth-be-damned rhetorical and ideological pieties have throughout history and in various places around the world led to devastating real world consequences, is painfully necessary. I must admit that I wryly enjoy his characterization of intellectuals as (and I may be paraphrasing slightly) pseudo-enlightened academics and educated folk who make everything a matter of social justice so that they may position themselves as warriors fighting on the side of the angels against the forces of evil in their own grandiose moral melodramas.
Indeed, in a world where facts matter, it's refreshing to have a man of good character who has always throughout an incredible career been dedicated to honest empiricism and rational analysis. That he is one of only a few makes reading his work as saddening as it is invigorating.

Simply superb
Would you listen to Intellectuals and Race again? Why?
Yes. It is an excellent book with a lot of information. Robertson Dean did an excellent job of narration.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Viewing history from an economic perspective is absolutely fascinating. Personally, I have had a sporadic interest in history as a matter of race. Consequently, this book took a lot of I had learned in a sporadic fashion and bound it in a deeper context.
What does Robertson Dean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I don't know. I just like Robertson's voice. I think that is partly because he and Sowell each have deep voices so it is more like hearing Sowell talk, though the rhythm of their speech is drastically different.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I don't know and I don't know why this question is asked.
Any additional comments?
This book is an expansion of some information from Sowell's Intellectuals and Society. I highly recommend each.

An Important Reflection
Unfortunately there are not enough honest scholars (intelectuals) thinking systematically, investigating and writing about this topic. Thomas Sowell is one of the few. He does a brilliant job bringing some much needed light to a very important subject.

Jam-packed with perspective and reason
Any additional comments?
Thomas Sowell brings a calm intellect and perspective to a problem born of ignorance. A must read for anyone--left or right--engaged or interested in today's racial politics or social history.

Thomas Sowell books in Audible Plus Catalog!
Most of the audio books by Thomas Sowell are now in the Audible Plus Catalog. Dr. Sowell, a PhD economist and former newspaper columnist, is a national treasure who comments on topics as diverse as economics to racial issues to school choice to late talking children. Anything he publishes is well worth reading. He may well be the most intelligent person in the US. He has both common sense and uncommon sense. He is now 91 years old.
Intellectuals and Race is based on research from many countries over a long period of time. It is among Sowell's best books although it is less than 6 hours in length. Although he qualifies as an intellectual himself Sowell tends to be very critical of public intellectuals. This book and all of his books have my recommendation. I do not plan to write reviews of all of Dr. Sowell's books (I have already written reviews on some in the past). I have recently listened to Compassion Versus Guilt (a compilation of his newspaper columns on the topic from the 1980s) and A Conflict of Visions (a remarkable comparison of constrained and unconstrained political/economic thought).
Actor Robertson Dean narrates Intellectuals and Race superbly

Preaching to the choir
Chances are that if you have bought this book you already have a leaning or whole hearted support to the other side of the prevailing argument. The books reiterates with facts what we already knew in our hearts and minds to be the truth and injustice. The narrator made it extremely hard to focus and even retain the much needed facts with the monotonous voice job. A 2nd listening might drive in the facts home. I was delighted that the book covers not only US but also touches on other countries too.

A well researched and presented...
A well researched and presented book on the treatment and ideology of race and intellectuals. Sowell discusses "the elephant in the room" that some intellectuals will neither discuss nor acknowledge.

ridiculous and intellectually dishonest
this book was written to defend The Bell Curve.
it's full of phrases such as 'the average Asian student would far as well in a game of basketball against a black student as the average black student would fare in an academic test against an Asian student.'
it's overall premise is outright racist, and it is intellectually dishonest in blaming culture for under-performing academics without attempting to analyze the origins of the 'culture'.
it even goes so far as to equate the actions (riots, etc) in the ghettoes of America and England as equal actions rooted in different experiences! Oppression is oppression, no matter your skin tone....
if you can read this book without feeling some form of disgust, re-evaluate your ideologies.

Disapells common notions and is very relevant.
It's amazing how this book came out about 10 years ago yet nailed exactly what is going on in our society.

An evenhanded and clear exposition
I find Thomas Sowells books worthwhile reading.
In this book he engages with the topic of race and intellectuals. Once again he warns against the lack of accountability, that is so characteristic for intellectuals. In this book it doesn’t matter if it’s the genetic based policies of the early 20. century, with eugenics, sterilization and segregation as consequences or the social or cosmic justice warriors, who makes their living advocating for affirmative action and blaming society for the lacking results of minority groups in USA.
Facts or ideas from Sowell, that I’ll try to remember, are the examples of changing IQ of different immigrant groups in the US; the success of minority groups like the Chinese in Malaysia, the Lebanese in West Africa but also Jews and Asian people in the US; the insistence that Slavery has been ubiquitous in the world, and that you could argue, that in fact it was the Western world, some white men, who were the first to turn against it; he has arguments against minimum wages and the well fare state as undermining blacks, because they are responsible for keeping black youth out of the working market, and young black mothers preferring to be ‘married’ with the state, as the man can’t provide. I’ve heard this argument repeated often from American conservatives, but I’m not sure if it’s true. Being a father my self, I would like to believe, that my presence makes a positive difference, but living in Denmark I know that many children end up with divorced parents. But maybe it’s another thing in the US, where the absent father is radically absent? In Denmark, I believe the majority of divorcees do try to share the time with the children in an equitable way.
