A constant comfort in James' life has been music, but he's not listened to anything new for a very long time. Idly browsing 'best of the year' lists, it dawns on him that 2016 may have been a grim year for a lot of reasons, but that it seemed to be an iconic year for music. And so begins a life-changing musical odyssey, as James finds himself desperately seeking solace in the music of 2016....

In 1994, fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. But he’d always been drawn to off-beat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t.... In his book, Louis takes the listener on a joyous journey through his life and unexpectedly successful career.

For almost a decade, Richard Herring has been answering sexist trolls on International Women's Day when they ask 'when is International Men's Day?' in the mistaken belief there isn't one. In The Problem with Men Richard expands on his Twitter discussions and tackles some of the big questions surrounding the problems of toxic masculinity - for women, but also for men.

Histoire
A deeply personal novel of identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of belonging and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part satire, part picaresque, at its heart it is the story of a father and son and the country they call home. Ranging from the heartland towns of America to palatial suites in Davos to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, Akhtar forges a narrative voice that is original as it is exuberantly entertaining.

Hungry traces Grace’s story from growing up eating beige food to becoming one of the much-loved voices on the British food scene. It’s also everyone’s story - from treats with your nan, to cheese and pineapple hedgehogs, to the exquisite joy of cheaply-made apple crumble with custard. It’s the high-point of a chip butty covered in vinegar and too much salt in the school canteen, on an otherwise grey day of double-maths and cross country running. It’s the real story of how we have all lived, laughed and eaten over the past 40 years.

Diarising his ramble in the form of a 'journey journal', Alan details the people and places he encounters, ruminates on matters large and small and, on a final leg fraught with danger, becomes not a man (because he was one to start off with) but a better, more inspiring example of a man.

This book explains the political ideas which underpin the modern world. But it is also something much more than that - it is a rallying cry for those who still believe in freedom and reason.

Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Fabulous but too short
This was an incredibly enjoyable book to listen to, but, it felt at least a couple of hours too short. I was really getting in to this, the same way I had for other great comedian biographies, and he said Epilogue. That was a disappointment, but only because the book was such a joy and I didn’t want it to end.

Funny and moving
Simon Amstell opens up, allowing the reader/listener insight into his personal life, insecurities, fears ... even his vanity. Rather than seeming self indulgent, his discourse provides a bond, a direct connection of his self doubts to our own. And, of course, he's funny. Very funny.

Wonderful!
I am normally a bit reticent about autobiographies but thoughtI’d give this a go as it has had such wonderful reviews. They are all deserved. This is a lovely book and beautifully read with extracts from live shows cut in.

Mind Expanding Fun
Amstell takes us on a journey of soul searching and maturation via his career trajectory, dating, travels, psychotherapy, and some illegal psychedelic drugs. I wished it was a bit longer, but laughed heartily throughout. I liked how he clarified through his experiences that no earthly person could possibly have the road map for your individual life when they themselves struggle enough knowing their own proper life path. Also, Amstell highlights the enduring value of stories to transmit wisdom and knowledge. His interesting voice narration easily held my attention.
