Description
Camden, North London: A tangled, mangled junction of train lines, roads, and waterways. Where minor celebrities hang out with minor criminals and where tourists and moody teenagers mingle.
In the heart of Camden, where rail meets road meets leyline, you might find the Arcana Emporium, run by one Alex Verus. He won't sell you a wand or mix you a potion, but if you know what you're looking for, he might just be able to help. That's if he's not too busy avoiding his would-be apprentice, foiling the Dark, outwitting the Light, and investigating a mysterious relic that has just turned up at the British Museum.
Fated is the first book in a major new series starring probability mage Alex Verus, for fans of Jim Butcher and Ben Aaronovitch.

Stilted voice and Man Writes Woman
The story and characters have a lot of potential but (a) the voice actor is not good enough and (b) female characters are badly written.
You can tell when the VO artist is at the end of a line, rather than the end of a sentence. He barely modulates his tone, it’s too monotonous.
Female characters- oh lord I could be here all day. Dreadful. Oh? Tee hee? You big bwave man!

Excellent gritty fantasy
I came across this book/reading by accident on the audible website and I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook. I enjoyed the nature of the main character who deals with magic without the endless psychological self examination of Harry Dresden. Whilst there are a number of books in this genre I thought the author showed a great imagination in creating and populating his alternate world. I thought there were elements of Neil Gaimans Neverwherein the book. I also enjoyed the world weary voice of the presenter, I think he gave Alex Verus a complex personality which suited the text. Good audiobook.

Flat characters and some casual sexism
The narrator was truly horrible for this kind of writing (though I think he could have been a good match for a nonfiction book?) and the characters were flat and uninteresting. But the plot was good and the system of magic pretty cool, so I kept listening for about three and a half hours. But when the male main character had to physically restrain and pin down the “hysterical” heroine/love interest “for her own good”, in a scene clearly written to show off the dynamic between a rational and strong man, and a woman who doesn’t know her own good and needs protection - it was time for me to quit. Jeez

Hated the fake posh English accent
Loved the book but was very disappointed with the narration, the fake Shakespearean English accent given the main character completely discredited the performance and was not at all compatible with the authors' character who is living in today's London, not the Middle ages. As a result I was not able to enjoy the audiobook. I will read the rest of the series on my Kindle.

I liked The Dresden Files, I loved Alex Verus
When i finished The Dresden Files i was looking for something similar and found this, Alex Verus.
I have now liened though this complete book series 2 times now while driving, working out or doing misc house work, and i cant really put my finger on what it is that makes me like it so much. The narrator was a bit hard to get used to at first, but i quickly grew to like hes voice acting and how he forms the characters in the books.
The classical underdog protagonist concept is absolutely not new or inventive in any way, nor is the "you grew up in a bad place, so therefore you are bad" thrope, but this book series makes an interresting story out of it.
I do recognise that some of the female characters are written in a way that is a bit stunted and in some cases outright bad (even with my "man-ears") and that would be my main critisism, but other than that this is one of my favourite audible books.

Worth to try on
First of all, I like that this book does not try to be Harry Dresden, it's easier to read when it does not compete. Making the main character be mage that sees future and how is he using it is very well written.
Second. Story is good, but still lacks something making it feels two dimensional. For me the main character does not interact with other characters enough. There are also aspects that I would have liked writer to think more. Like names Onyx that was a dark mage or that Aragne the spider. Keeping all names in "ordinary human" world would have kept the story more real and not slipping Harry Potter style on those parts.
Against most of readers, I like the narrator. He does the good job and is one part why I will buy second book.

Entertaining
It was a nice, relaxing fantasy. The plot was interesting and the approach on magic quite new. I saw that many persons have criticized the narrator. I almost did not get the book because of this - a bad narrator can really ruin a book. Well, after listening, in my opinion, the narrator is excellent. He can transmit quite well the characters and their feelings. He is not speaking too slow and he articulates clearly with a good intonation. Some say he does not convey a lot of emotion. He conveys some emotion but this book is not Shakespeare. I do not think he should transmit a lot of emotion. I think that his approach on the main character (a bit aloof, ironic, with dry humor) is just what the author intended.

Well that was a great first book in a series.
Would you listen to Fated again? Why?
I am coming back to this series and this book again. tore through this book and grab the next one. I am sure I miss bit of coolness in the overall awesome.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alex is the focus and at this point it must be him. Luna has promise and I wonder where that will go.
Which scene was your favorite?
The fight on the roof. So elegant in writing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and I did.

I don't give up on books, but not this time...
they promised it to be "for readers of Ben Aaronovitch". That is so not true. the characters in this book are so not appealing! Their actions are irrational and motivations change within one sentence!
not my kind of read. the magic in this world, the fractions and politics they just seem to be too childish. The relationship between Luna and Alex is awkward and unappealing, she tends to say "no" to something and he would make her because "he knows what needs to be done and she is just too stoppidto realise and doesn't know life..." Really? She is also an odd-ball and the problem is not just in her curse but in her motivations to do pretty much anything...
There is quite a lot of violence involved in Alex's past and present and it seems to follow the logic "now let's just overdo the violence, cause things have to be serious". but if you escaped from slavery and a fucked up dark mage you probably don't go and open a magic shop in London, where everyone knows how to find you...
And one more thing is the protagonist's patronising or humiliating tone that he mostly reserves for female characters... That's just too many cons here. I won't even finish it, sorry guys.

Magic Quest in the British Museum of London
Urban Fantasies seem to be pretty popular right now and several decent authors populate this field. With his first adult novel “Fated” Benedict Jacka established himself already as a serious player there. He plays in the same league Jim Butcher and Ben Aaronovitch play, even if he still might lack some of the refinement.
Jacka’s prose is adequate and “easy listening”. The style is straight forward and perhaps a little bit simple. His strength is not so much the creation of atmosphere, but the presentation of plausible and strong characters and their behavior. They have sufficient granularity to appear lifelike, even if you get frustrated sometimes, because you would like to learn more about their background and what turned them into what they are today.
Jacka’s protagonist Alex Verus is a mage, but rather different from Butcher’s Harry Dresden or Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant. Alex does not cast spells or use powerful magic, he is a diviner, he can foresee the future. He runs a magic shop in Camden and because of some fallout in the past, he keeps his distance from the magic community. His only friends are Luna, a young girl suffering under a very nasty curse, Starbreeze, a friendly, but rather brainless air elemental and Arachne, a huge spider with some skills in fashion and garment design. Of course, being a diviner is more complicated than it sounds. Similar to a chess player, Alex can research the different outcomes of individual actions and research all the possibilities of the near future.
When an old magical artifact is found in the British Museum, Alex’s skill is in great demand. A diviner is needed to access the hidden tool in the artifact, which would bestow incredible power on the bearer. Various factions fight over the possession of the artifact and Alex Verus is in great peril. He has to make the right choice and save his life and the life of his friends at the same time.
There is enough action to keep you entertained, but especially charming is the very tender relationship between Luna and Alex. If you like the genre, listen to the book, you will not regret it.

laughably bad
if you were directed here, as I was, because you enjoyed Rivers of London, run away, now! I listened to a few chapters of Fated, then went to check if I'd accidently bought a children's book. Rivers of London is light reading, but the plots are engaging and suprising, the characters have depth and moral complexity, and you might even get some history and geography lessons about London. and humour! 'Fated' is definitely not that.
Fated is like a teenage D&D dungeon master decided to write a novel. it takes one clever idea (probability mage) and buries it under bad prose, shallow characters and a simplistic plot
*spoiler alert (if I haven't yet dissuaded you):
our "hero", a mage who owns a magic shop, has three friends (whom are later revealed to be the motivation for his 'goodness' or 'humanity'). they are all female: one is literally a giant spider; another he describes lovingly as, "dumb as a box of rocks"; and the main woman in his life, who needs rescuing at every turn, Luna, he addresses as, "good girl" (because she fetches things for him?). Luna, btw, has a multi-generational curse which kills anyone who gets close to her. simply touching her (or her female progenitors) is deadly... and how exactly did these women procreate for many generations?
I just can't.

not very gripping
Maybe it's because I'm coming off the Harry Dresden series, but Alex Verus pales in comparison. There is nothing exactly wrong with it, it's just not gripping.
The protagonist is not especially witty, or tortured, or angry, or sad, or anything really. He can see the future in all possible variations. OK. You just don't get a glimpse of how he tries to combine this with a "normal" life or where that might be problematic. All in all, the book is just ... meh.
In all fairness, perhaps I would be less harsh if I hadn't listened to 15 Harry Dresdens right beforehand.

Great plot with a hint of sexism
Loved the fantasy background and fast-paced story. While some women might not notice the sexism, it certainly grated with me.
Beware of mild spoilers:
The female characters are all of minor strength and/or importance to the male characters and always follow their orders or are very frequently very violently made to do so. Beware of rape allusions. Violence on women is described in excruciating detail and often drawn out. Violence on men is very rare and when it occurs it is frequently glossed over. While it is theoretically mentioned that men are also enslaved by dark wizards, the book only shows detailed enslavement of women. The female sidekick is over 20 and called "good girl" as a running gag. At one point she clamors it might be better to become a rape slave to a dark wizard and lose all free will than continue harming people accidentally with her bad luck curse...

A thrilling audiobook
Great story and an excellent narrator - strong recommendation! The story kept us interested all the time, and the narrator was able to perfectly capture the different characters.

Good, but lacking humor
Another good urban fantasy with great potential for an ongoing series this book tells a gripping story with just the right balance between tale and thrill. What is lacking to make this a five-star is humor, even if it is a dark tale through many chapters.
The potential is there (look at the PC Peter Grant series) and also it would be nice if the author would stop hinting that there art things he can't tell and spill it out in detail a few minutes later. It's silly considering that the whole tale is in retrospect.
But still: gripping and entertaining. I will continue with the series!

Formulaic, sexist and patronising
This was recommended to me because of interest in Aaronovitch‘s Rivers of London series. This book however does NOT compare. The story is told by an omniscient first person narrator who - besides patronisingly dumping the same information on the reader over and over again - just so happened to be the best at simply everything. Always. And when he does hit a deadend/an unsolvable problem, he has some kind of deus ex machina device ready… but possibly the worst aspect is the author‘s treatment of female characters. I just can’t… it’s too pathetic. Just don’t waste your money on this. Or even worse, your time and energy. There’s few books that may leave you dumber than before, but this is one of them.
