Description

The "powerful and emotionally charged" fantasy series from the author of the Sevenwaters novels continues, as Blackthorn and Grim face haunting secrets and old adversaries.

Feather bright and feather fine, none shall harm this child of mine.

Healer Blackthorn knows all too well the rules of her bond to the fey: seek no vengeance, help any who ask, do only good. But after the recent ordeal she and her companion, Grim, have suffered, she knows she cannot let go of her quest to bring justice to the man who ruined her life.

Despite her personal struggles, Blackthorn agrees to help the princess of Dalriada in taking care of a troubled young girl who has recently been brought to court while Grim is sent to the girl's home at Wolf Glen to aid her wealthy father with a strange task - repairing a broken-down house deep in the woods. It doesn't take Grim long to realize that everything in Wolf Glen is not as it seems - the place is full of perilous secrets and deadly lies.

Back at Winterfalls, the evil touch of Blackthorn's sworn enemy reopens old wounds and fuels her long-simmering passion for justice. With danger on two fronts, Blackthorn and Grim are faced with a heartbreaking choice - to stand once again by each other's side or to fight their battles alone.

Third Time's The Charm

This is the third and hopefully not last novel in Marillier's Blackthorn and Grim fantasy series. It's as good, if not better, than the previous two. Den Of Wolves has a well executed plot and expertly developed characters.

Strong females are consistently front-and-center in this dark fairy tale-like world. Although the reader experiences other-worldly creatures, the atmosphere is actually more comparable to magic realism.

This series does not have a lot of the war and bloodshed as in many epic fantasy series, but don't be fooled...it can be equally as brutal. The focus is on character interaction, survival, and of course, the unique relationship between the haunting Blackthorn and the gentle giant, Grim.

There is closure to the storyline in this novel, but the characters are so strong that the opportunity is there for the series to continue. I hope it does.

Most enjoyable - loved it!

I loved this book's main story, which was yet again filled with imagination. But this book also has a lovely way of rounding off Blackthorn and Grim's troublesome past.
I didn't enjoy the idea that a story so rounded might mean the end of the series - please, no!
I'm really hoping Blackthorn & Grim will simply enter a new phase of uncanny detections.
I recommend Blackthorn & Grim to anyone that enjoys magical soothing and the romance of true enduring love that has a slow but steady build.
I will hope and look for another in this series. Bravo!

A Master Class in Fantasy Fiction Writing.

Astonishing, glorious and engrossing, I hated to see this book end -- and I thought book 2 was amazing!

With this series, and particularly Den of Wolves, Marillier provides a master class in fantasy fiction writing worthy of Lois McMaster Bujold's *World of the Five Gods* series -- a personal favorite.

In this series, she has crafted an authentic world rich in human emotion, filled with simple everyday people and their stories. Every lush description, every story told, becomes a spell weaving an absorbing connection to her characters and their world. I'm truly blown away.

With such an intricate plot, it would have been easy for a lesser writer to go off the forest path and lose their way, but Marillier writes with confidence, and keeps her footing right to the end as she brings Blackthorn and Grim's journey full circle. Her parting gift? A satisfying end to all the loose threads, while still leaving room for more to come. I couldn't be happier or more impressed.

But right now, I'm missing Big Man and Lady so much that I'm wondering what I'll do with myself now that the last tale is over. I guess I'll be stalking Juliet Marillier's FB page, waiting for news about Blackthorn and Grim, hoping they're resting easy in their cottage for now, having a brew, while Ripple dreams on the hearth before the fire.

I hope they're taking it easy. They'll need all their strength for the next adventure,

Book 4 can't come soon enough.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- The whole series! -- For everyone but young readers.

A satisfying tale for less than perfect people!

So many fantasies center around young, beautiful heroines and heroes and happily-ever-afters. This series- and this installment in particular - felt like a fairy tale for grown-ups, for the downtrodden , for the scarred among us. And the mystery at its core held my attention and curiosity even when I wasn't listening. I found myself pondering the outcome at odd moments. This is rare for me.
I love this author, and but this tale in particular will remain one of my favorites.

The best one so far!!!

According to Juliette, she was only contracted for 3 books but trying to talk whoever in to letting her do a 4th. I really really hope she succeeded in that!!!! Den of Wolves was by far the best one but I'd relisten to the others as well.

wounderfull story

If you have never read or listened to this author you are in for a treat. These stories are dark to start with so if that is not to your liking then do not get them. The author write with such depth that I wounder if there is a tragic event in the past that lens itself to the depth.

Excellent story and combination of voices

This fantasy series features an excellent overarching story, with plots that are tied up at the end of each of the 3 books. No cliffhangers then - simply a quest which may have more excitement before resolution. Which there is, as each new tale unfolds.

I am a fan of tales of women who are smart and who are willing to act, but human (ie, not wonder women). Blackthorn is such a woman She is not always willing or able to play nice with others ... with damn good reasons.. As another plus for me, tales of medicine before doctors are an interest of mine, and her role as the "wise woman" of the area is well developed, with appropriate details.

I'd give the series 5 stars. This book was my least favorite of the three; not much new in the way of character development left for this third book. So, I've rated it 4 stars.

No sex. Explicit violence in nightmares and some lesser violence as the story progresses.

5 Stars to Blackthorn & Grim

This is the 3rd of the Blackthorn and Grim stories and it is every bit as rich as compelling as the first 2 books. Some major questions are answered about their rescue from prison in the first book but the way in which these two strong characters interact with each other is what makes the book special. Highly recommend all three as a very rewarding fantasy series.
