Description
For centuries the Roman Catholic Church, based on Matthew 16:13-20, has said the Church is built on the authority of Peter, making Peter the first Pope. They have said it has established papal succession and makes the papacy the heart of divine authority on the Earth.
Protestants have said that the Church was not built on Peter, but on the confession that Peter makes in verse 16, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”. That it is Christ who is the head of the Church and there is no papal succession found anywhere in the text.
Dispensationalists have said it is a passage where Christ introduces something new, “I will build My Church", future tense, implying that there has never been a Church, but there will be, making the Church distinct from Israel.
Nondispensationalists say it is not technical, but that the Lord will continue doing the building of his people in the future as He has always been doing the building in the past.
There have been extensive debates about the gates of Hades, hell, or the grave. In what way does the Church conquer the gates? What are these keys Peter will be given? What does he unlock and lock with them? What does he bind and loose on Earth? There are a lot of issues here, and we'll be looking at these in this audiobook and answering what or who is the foundation of the Church that the Lord builds?
