    Praise the Goblin King

Let me lay it on the line
He has two on the vine.
    I mean two sets of narrators;
    So divine

On an algorithm made of crystal
    He patrolls the land
    With knife and tattoo
    In his perfect hand

    Here comes Daniel
    in control
    Readers dig his prose
    and his gallant stroll

    Enlightens brains
    Like he was Moiraine

Great start to a world. Minor hangups.

Overall I enjoyed this short journey. I just wanted to write one thing that bothered me a little bit. I'm a Materials Engineer with some experience in metallurgy, and the concept of "a new way to manufacture steel" bothered be quite a bit. I could've looked past it if there was a little bit of explanation as to the method, but the vague way that this was introduced and not explained threw me off. Its cool because I wanted to know more, but also not because I cant imagine a more efficient way to make steel that would allow us to "pave the streets with it". Hope there is some elbaortation on this in the continuation and it doesn't just stay a new way to make steel that is somehow much more efficient without explanation. And Daniel if you're reading this, I would be happy to be your materials science consultant haha.

    potential

so being a fan of daniels YT channel I bought the book and I'm a bit torn. the cons first

    cons
characters felt bland aside from our MC the other characters didn't feel alive to me. chapman and williams I really felt could have had more impact and needed more development. sam could have been a dog for as little as he was developed. I didn't find myself attached to anyone really aside from khlid

the first half of the story slow, not slow like setting up the story just kind of meh not much feeling or humor and only basic level introductions. I'll get to back half in the pros.

a bit too much forshadowing. the mystery of it all was a bit given away.

    pros

khlid is well written. if he had the pages to bring along the other characters like he did with her alot of my cons would be solved.

the final 90mins or so saved the book for me. I really enjoyed the final 20 minutes especially. good job on the ending DG!

I like the world although I would have preferred a bit more description in the beginning to really help set the time period. had he mentioned the breech loaded guns earlier it would have allowed me really feel the setting a bit earlier. still though the setting and world are good.

it's his first book and while it's not great there are issues, overall I did enjoy it and if he trusts himself to allow a bit more side character development in his next books my issues with performance would be gone. keep it up daniel I have faith in you.

    The beginning of greatness.

Daniel, thank you for writing this story!

As far as the audiobook goes, there’s no one out there better than Kate Reading and Michael Kramer.

I’m excited for the next two novellas, as well as the larger novels set in this budding world.

Some major Stephen King energy right off the bat - a story that makes you really think and ask questions. Since it’s a quick listen (and/or read) I’d highly recommend this to anyone reading this review! You won’t be disappointed.

A Vivid Horror, Fantasy, & Detective Mashup

I saw this pop up on Audible and stopped what I was reading out of pure nosiness. I follow the authors YouTube channel regularly if not avidly, and curiosity got the better of me. I'm pleased to find that the novella is quite good!

    THE GOOD

Prose & Storytelling: This reads very well, with straight forward but vivid prose that effectively conveys the horror elements of the story, as well as the hard-boiled detectives personalities. No flowery imagery here, just the facts ma’am. But for a debut novel, this was far better than I expected. The story flows smoothly and the author has a confident voice.

"Khlid pulled a cigarette from her pocket and took a moment to pity the man with so little to lose. A boom of distant thunder cemented the dread in her stomach."

Characters: Despite the brevity of the story, I was impressed with how quickly I came to know and care for the characters. We follow three characters, all detectives, and two of them a married couple. There is some fun dialogue and testosterone soaked rivalry going on that made me chuckle. The bond between the married couple was touching, contrasting with their decisiveness, competence, and violence when needed.

Worldbuilding: We only get some broad brush-strokes of what this world is all about, but what we see is tantalizing. It seems to be some subtle criticism of social upper classes will be a theme in the series moving forward, with a God and seeming demi-gods at the center of the world being built.

Action: The author effectively creates and sustains tension during several action scenes, and the horror elements were quite visceral in their descriptions. There were a few genuine edge-of-your-seat moments.

Ambitious: I can see where some readers may not care for the ultimate ending, but my take was that it shows the author is willing to be bold, and go to some dark places. This is not a book for kids, and I love this dark and horrific vibe. Not what I was expecting from a Fantasy author.

    THE BAD...ISH?

Complete Story, but Too Short: The only negative I can think of for this story is that it is too short. Just as I'm really getting into it, the story ends. I know that more is coming, but I can't quite give this top marks, not because of the quality of the content, but because the brevity of the format.

    THE VERDICT

This feels like an epic prologue to a great story to come. I will be first in line for the next novella!

I don't like Kate reading performance.

Kate will read a line of words and at the end it will go up in volume for the last word. I know she is very popular voice performer but sure wish authors would pick someone else or maybe change how she speaks so it's normal. It's really hard to focus on the story when she does this. As far as the book goes it was good. There are sharp transitions a couple of times but other than that it's a good book.

I'm in. Excited to see where the story goes

I will preface this by saying that I've been subscribed to him for years, and have watched many of his videos regarding progress of his worldbuilding. It is very likely that has affected my enjoyment in a positive way.
If you are not subscribed to his channel, I am not sure what you would think. Personally I've been hyped for his series for a while.

    What did I like?
The tone - This book sets the tone wonderfully with the gruesome introduction. The overall vibe is pretty grimdark in my opinion but there is still fun to be had. I finished the novel in a good mood. The fight scenes come across as brutal but not sickening.
The characters - They were certainly well realized and I enjoying getting their perspective on the events in the book.
The worldbuilding - The world itself is pretty bleak with so many sprinkles of mystery involving the society.
The ending - I will not spoil it, but the reactions from the characters of the events unfolding are very realistic. I was on the edge of my seat.

    What can be improved?
There were quite a few minor things that drew me out of it a little bit, but not enough to halt enjoyment.

I understand that, being a novella, there isn't the time to establish certain character motivations and morals. There were a few occurrences where a character is introduced by acting a certain way that, as we are told, contradicts actions they usually take. The thing is, we're not introduced to them in their normal state. The one example I can think of is Sam when he doesn't want word to get out of details of the crime scene yet he's described as trusting or how we're told the police chief is a good person after he's seen being a jerk to the main character. I guess this stuck out more just because this happened quite a lot.
A possible way to remedy this is to include a brief scene of seeing Sam trust a guard with some important task before entering the crime scene, or showing the chief's concerned reaction to Khlid's return to the station in her state.

It would have also been nice to see a grip too at some point. Granted, I feel that could be perceived as showing your cards too early so that one is understandable.

As always, Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are amazing.

That's all I can think of for now. I'm very excited to see what happens next. Keep on truckin'

    Amazing first book

I went into this book expecting it to be somewhat okay due to it being his first ever book but boy was I wrong. Opening scene hooked me right away, and I ended up immediately binging the entire book. Very interesting and thought provoking world with well written characters that show a lot of promise for what’s next to come in this series. Only complaint I have is that this is the only book out currently.

Great start to a new series.

I enjoyed the majority of this book, which did a great job of giving listeners an introduction to the world. The characters were well written, and I really want to know what happens next. My only real complaint is the lack of Magic systems. Two were teased on the author's Youtube channel but only lightly introduced in the book and not very clearly. Still, it was a fun listen and I'll be grabbing the next one.

Decent overall but not without issues

I’ve watched a fair amount of Daniel Greene’s YouTube videos on books and writing so I was curious to see how his knowledge would translate to his own writing. In short, the man knows how to describe what’s going on and the world we are in with great detail. There are some pretty obvious places where he has left things out to further explain later but it’s an interesting world. It at times does feel shallow but I think that’s been done on purpose for the next two novellas.

I did have a bit of trouble separating to two male MCs in the beginning of the book and the author throws out character names of people you haven’t met a bit too often. I also think there’s a couple of logical flaws but I can reach a bit to explain them away so it wasn’t too big of an issue.

I was surprised that there was a few problematic issues throughout the book. First, we have a gruesome murder of a child and a male and female MC are both in the scene. Only the female MC is shown to struggle with the death of a child. This is subtle but it does show some concerning implicit bias. It wasn’t even to make me want to stop reading but it did put me back a bit.

There was also a very casual nature to dealing with police brutality. This happens both when a MC just thinks about how terrified a random street vendor will be over the potential of being jumped by the police and when the female MC decides to attack a bad guy that was already restrained. This isn’t a major issue if it was dealt with better. Daniel Greene neither has the MC struggle with the decision or show any remorse over attacking someone. It is also presented as something we are supposed to root for the character when it happens but instead made me dislike her and resulted in me being glad when the character had bad things happen later in the book.

Overall it was decent and I would be willing to check out a second novella but I do find some concerning issues with the author’s decisions. This is his first book so I hope the next one will address some of these issues better.

I’ll also note that this is one of my absolute favorite performances by Kate Reading although I’m not sure that Michael Kramer needed to be included in the narrations.

    Great and on point

Really liked the book. It does a great job of getting started quick and setting the stage for things to come while still being compelling on it’s own.
