We're back for Season Six, and we're taking aim at the hero’s journey, and the way it teaches men to chase a “mission” while women keep the whole world running at home. We make the case for richer stories built on connection, community, and the inner life, not conquest and applause.

A man gets a call about a big opportunity right after his second child is born and proudly tells the story like it proves he’s committed to his mission. All we can hear is the part he skips: the postpartum partner left at home with a newborn and a toddler, the invisible labor, the unasked consent, and the cultural permission slip that lets men chase “the quest” while women hold the entire foundation of daily life.

We dig into why the classic hero’s journey still shapes coaching, career advice, and pop culture, and why it can be both sexist and spiritually flattening. We talk about the mental load women carry, the way mothers get criticized for work travel while fathers get excused, and the unspoken damage this does to intimacy and family systems. Along the way, we pull in memoir as a counter-story, including reflections inspired by Maggie Smith’s You Could Make This Place Beautiful, where the inner life and the hard rebuild after loss are real heroism.
