It was the summer of 2009, on the outskirts of a town called Stillwater, Minnesota. I took a job watching a little girl named Emily at a house set way back on Beaver Creek Road — a narrow gravel lane that ended in a loop of trees and a single pale yellow farmhouse. The parents were going to a wedding in the Cities; they said they'd be back by one. Around ten, after Emily was asleep, I heard music from the basement. Not a stereo. A piano, playing itself — scales, slow and patient, as if a child was practicing. I went down to check. The piano was in a room at the bottom of the stairs, a small spinet with yellowed keys. The lid was closed. The room was empty. But the keys kept moving under the wood, pressing down in sequence, note by note. I stood there for a long time. And then I saw the photograph on the wall — a girl in a white dress, about eight years old, standing next to that same piano. Her hands were at her sides. But in the photograph, the piano lid was up.
