הרמב"ם, בשיעור היומי (תרומות רפ"ה), כותב: "אין תורמין אלא מן היפה שנאמר בהרימכם את חלבו ממנו". וזה קשור עם הענין דאהבת ישראל שהרי נתינת תרומה לכהן היא כדי לספק לכהן את כל המצטרך לו ויש לתת לו "מן היפה" דוקא (וענין זה מהווה גם לימוד כללי לכללות המצוות (שהרי כל עניני התומ"צ כלולים זב"ז) כמ"ש הרמב"ם ש"כל דבר שהוא לשם הא-ל הטוב שיהי' מן הנאה והטוב וכו'"). ועד"ז מודגש הענין דאחדות ישראל בזה שיכול להרים תרומה גם ע"י יהודי אחר שנעשה שלוחו ו"שלוחו של אדם כמותו"! ולימוד נוסף מהמשך ההלכה "ואם אין שם כהן תורם מן המתקיים אע"פ שיש שם יפה שאינו מתקיים וכו'": פעולה חד-פעמית בעניני תומ"צ ע"י יהודי יש לה קיום נצחי - "דבר המתקיים"! ועוד.

Today’s Rambam states (Hilchos Terumos, beginning of chapter 5): “We separate terumah only from the finest, as it is stated: ‘When you separate its choicest portion from it.’” This requirement embodies Ahavas Yisroel, because the purpose of terumah is to provide the kohen with his needs, and it must be given specifically from the finest. This also serves as a general lesson for all mitzvos (all matters of Torah and mitzvos are interconnected), as the Rambam writes: “…everything given for the sake of G-d who is good should be of the most attractive and the highest quality.” Similarly, this requirement emphasizes Jewish unity, in that one may separate terumah even through another Jew serving as his agent, because “A person’s agent is considered like himself.” There is another lesson from the next part of the halacha, which states, “If there is no Kohen there, one should separate from produce that will last, even though there is finer produce that will not last…”: A one-time act of Torah and mitzvos performed by a Jew is something that “will last” forever.
