Luna recounts a cold February night in 2019 at the Haines Funeral Home in Shadeland, Ohio. A man brought in his twelve-year-old daughter's body after a house fire. Heart disease would have claimed her within the year anyway, he said. But what Luna found in the girl's pocket—a folded piece of paper with a drawing of the funeral home, the date, and her own name on a headstone—made the skin on her arms prickle. The drawing showed a detail Luna hadn't mentioned to anyone: a small chip in the corner of the stone, from a delivery truck years ago. Luna keeps the paper in her desk drawer. She's never told anyone else. Some nights she takes it out, traces the lines, and wonders if some people just know.
